"pipes of the character usually-employed for constructing sewers and other conduitsj and the object of the in'lprovement is to make the pipe in semi-cylindric sections for economy iii-casting, and to provide means for holding the sections against longitudinal or lateralfdisplacementwhen brought together to form a- ..pipe section and b'ywhich the semr-cvlindric sections can be held't-ogether by pins fgr transportation orhandling.
A fnrther'lobject of theimproveinent is to so shape thefbell flange of; the" pipe and the holding means sothat'by removing the pins on one side, the upper section can be raised upon the opposite edgeof the lowersection as a fulcrum,'to give access to the interior I made Wit-htheir edges in the same circurnof the pipe for cleaning and other purposes. p
The objects of the improvementthus set forth in general terms are attainedby the preferred embodiment hf the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which .Figure 1, is a side elevation of a 'fullpipe sect-ion madeof tWosemi-cylindric sections. and held together the improved holding means; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one semi c vlindric section; Fig. 3, a cross section on line 3'-'3, Fig. '1; Fig. 4:. a similar section showing the upper section opened from the lower section; Fig. 5, a side elevation of a pipe made with broken joints; and Fig. 0; as perspective View showing a pipe section with the upper half opened from the lower half. p
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The semi-cylindric sections 1 of the pipe are all made alike, excepting that a half section 1 must he usedat each end of the series for making a p pe with staggered joints. Each long semi-cylindric section is provided with the lateral rib 2 on each side edge. the annular rib 3 on the spigot end. and the intermediate. ribs 4: around the sideof the pipe, which'ribs are provided for strengthening the pipe and are preferably- {TED er -re PATENT orrron.

ferential alinenientg and: fo gfl i 5 5mm i preferably tapered troni; ,the..
the present invention. the lat rali pipe to a coin )arativel v thin edged: ll flange 5 is provided on the otherend- 'section'and is shaped .to telescope ,fi'eelv over the spigotend of gan'adjoinipgsctioni.
On one side edgeuof each long-semic Q lindric section are provided t tvo latei'allvt (llSPOSQClhooks 6, formed. with tlie inner sides of their shanks extended substantially tangent to and beyond t-he edge oft-lie lateral rib, and wit-h a portion of their ocliets outside the plane of .the section edges and onythe other side edge OftheseCtion are provided two pairs of similar hookjsgtr, the hooks of each pair being spaced apart" to be opposite. the'sides of thecofiesponding single hook 6, and each set ofhooks being located in the .middle' of the respectiveencl halves of the. section, ignoring tlie-lengthibf the bell flange.
To form a' full pipesection. two long semi-cylindric sections 'are placed together; and itisevident that the single hooks on the one side of each section will enter. be tween the corresponding pair of hooks on the abutting edge of the other section..' as shown in Fig.1; and it is evident when the sections are thus assembled. the abutment of the sidesof the overlapping hooks will prevent a longitudinal displacement of the sections with reference .toeach other. and
the abutment of the tangential 'shanks'of the hooks with the lateral ribs, will prevent a lateral displacement of the sections. With the hooks in this relation, it is evident that. the pins 7 may be entered endwise into the opposing socketsformed by the several overlapping hooks. by means of which the semi-cvlindric sections will be held together. It will be understood that 'the'use of pins not necessary to hold the sections together when the pipe isinstalled under the ground. but are intended more particularly for holding the two sections together for transporting and; handling the full sections of pipe. It is furthermore evident that it is unnecessary to remove the pins when the full secion 'tio-ns are placed in the ground, for the rea- "son .that by making the pins out of wood, -.whic'his the preferred material, they will similarlyprovided with 'a single hook 6 on 'seoti'ons, for ma king a pipe one, ,e'edge anda pair of similar hooks '6 mittie other side edge, and it is eviv rangement, it "isfurthermore evident thatthe hooks of each long section will overlap with corresponding hooks in thetwo oppos ing long sections, thereby. holdin orinterlocking the several longitudinal? sections together.
The bell flanges 43 are beveled outwardly at each side edge of the semi-cylindric section. and it is evident that by reason ot'the peculiar shape oft-he hook shanks set forth herein. the removal of the pinsfrom one side of a full pipe section, permits the upper half thereof to be rotated upward on the opposite edge of the lower half as a ful-- erun1.'as shown 1n Figs. at and 6, to give ac cess to the inside of the pipe for cleanmg and other purposes.
-I claim v l. A culvert pipe made of seini-cylindric sections with one or more lateral hooks on one side edge and corresponding pairs of hooks on the other side edge, whereby (:orresponding; hooks of adjoining sections will abut ted over-lap each otheigeach hook having its shank'extended substantially tangent to the edge of thesection and a portion of its socket out ide. the plane of the edges thereof. f2.'i{\.f-ci crtpipemade of seini-eylindrie sectionsha'ying tapered ribs on each side edge, with one or more lateral hooks on one edge. and corresponding; pairs of hooks ou the other edge. whereby eorrespoinling hooks of ad Onnng sections-W111 overlap each other, eac'h'hook having its shank substantially tangent to the edge of the lateral rib and a portion of its socket outside the plane of the section edges. v
3. A culvert pipe made of semi-cylindric sections having}; a bell flange on one end and tapered ribs on each side edge, with one or more lateral hooks on one edge and corresponding pairs of hooks on the other edge.-
whereby corresponding hooks of adjoining sections will-overlap each othei: each hook having its shank substantially tangent to the edge of the lateral rib and :1 portion of its socket outside the plane of its section edges, the bell flange being beveled at the section edges.
