CAN-FILLING PUMP.
Application To all whom it may concern: j"
Be it known that I, ALLEN A. BowsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne,
and useful Improvements in Can-Filling Pumps, of which the following is a specification. v
Heretofore in handling or dispensing heavy oils or liquids, considerable difiiculty has been experienced in that the air coming in contact with the wall of the pump cylincausing the piston to work hard and with To overcome this difficulty and serious objection and to provide means for preventing the caking or hardening of the oils-or liquids on the wall of the pump cylinderis the primary object of this invention.
A further object is to provide improved means foralways maintaining the pump cylinder full of liquid so long as there is sufficient liquid in the tank from which the liquid is dispensed. v
A further object is to provide an improved pump of this character which will be simple, cheap and durable in construction and efficient and effective in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating an exemplification of the invention and in which- *Figure 1 is an elevation of an improved pump constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2.2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line-3 3' ofF 1g. 2. gig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of ig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings and in this exemplific'ation of the invention, the numeral 10 designates a supporting base which is provided with a chamber ll'opening through the top thereof, and an inlet opening 12 extending through the bottdin thereof and communicating with the chamber 11.
Specification of Letters Patent.

in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new ity of the cylinder 21 the cylinder 21 wil "shown,
The base 10 is preferably Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
provided with supporting legs or membersthe same elevated above the I I support uponwhich the base base isalso provided with a discharge open- 13 for holding rests. The
The chamber 11 is preferably provided -with a shouldered portion 20, upon which the end of a suitable cylinder 21- is adapted to rest and said cylinder is preferably of a configuration similar to the configuration of the chamber 11 and of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of said chamber.
A suitable head 22 is provided with a 8 said head isadapted to rest chamber23, which opens through one face of the head and upon and be supported by the free extreml communicate with-the chamber 23 therein. The .head is also proby means of a stem- 17 which passes through a supporting TO s. r. BOWSER & co. INQ,
16 is arranged I in such a manner that vided with a discharge outlet 24, which opens through the same face of the head, and the chamber-23 has communication with the discharge outlet 24 through the medium of a suitable passage 25. A discharge pipe 26 is connected by one end to the discharge outlet 24 inany desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of screw threads as and said discharge pipe 26 extends toward the base 10 and terminates at a point slightly above the base of the sup porting legs 13, so that when the pump cylinder is placed within the tank 27 so that the supporting legs 13- rest upon the bottom 28 thereof, the free extremity of the disrods or bolts 29, which are provided with clamped together.
heads and said rods or bolts 29 pass through suitable ears or projections 31 on the head 22 and the free extremities of said rods or bolts are preferably screw threaded as at 32 and are adapted to be seated in suittble threaded apertures in the base 10 and when in position the heads 30 will rest upon the ears or projections 31 and by seating the threaded extremities 32 in their respective apertures, the parts will be firmly The discharge opening 14 is preferably provided with interior screw threads33 and located within the opening is a valve seat 34,
which is preferably provided with a periph-' valve 37 is adapted to dooperate with the valve seat 34 and said valve 37 is preferably of a construction similar to the construction of the valve 16. Connected with the coupling member 36 is a reducer member 38 and connectedwith said reducer member 38 is a discharge pipe 39, the upper extremity of which projects above the top of the tank 27 and secured to said extremity is a faucet 40, the specific construction of which forms no part of the present invention.
If desired, a valve seat 41 and valve 42, similar in construction to the valve seat 34 and the valve 37, may be arranged between the coupling member 36 and the reducer member 38 and may beheld in position by means of the reducer member 38 engaging the peripheral flange 43 of the valve seat. The upper extremity of the discharge pipe 39 maybe supported in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a bracket or support 44, which is secured to a base 45, the latter being adapted to rest upon and be secured to the top 46 of the tank, so that when the cylinder 21 is placed within the tank, the support 45 will rest upon the top 46.
A suitable piston is adapted to move within the cylinder 21 and said piston pref-' erably comprises a body portion 47, having a centrally disposed and upwardly opening recess or chamber 48. A piston rod' 49 is pro- .vided with an enlargement or head 50'on one extremity thereof and said extremity, together with the head or enlargement 50, is adapted tobe seated within the recess or chamber 48. This recess or chamber'48 is preferably provided with interior screw threads and surrounding the piston rod 49 is a sleeve or collar 51, which is provided with peripheral screw threads and said sleeve or collar is adapted to be seated in the recess or chamber 48 and isof such a diameter that the peripheral screw threads thereon will engage the screw threads in the recess or chamber 48 to secure the piston rod and piston together.
The body portion of the piston 47 is preferably of a diameter considerably smaller than the diameter of the cylinder and said body portion is provided with a peripheral flange 52, which is of a diameter only slightly smaller than the diameter of the cylinder 21. A suitable flexible member 53 .is supported by-the piston head 47 so as to surround the piston rod 49' and is of a diameter somewhat larger than the diameter of the cylinder 21, so that when the flexible member is in position, the periphery thereof will. engage and be bent downwardly by the wall of the cylinder; This flexible member is held in position preferably by means of a plate 54 which surrounds the piston rod 49 and is itself held in position preferably by means of a nut or collar 55 adjustably mounted upon the sleeve 51.
