W J. MILLOWAY.
GRAIN DOOR. APPLICATION FILED MAY 8. 1912.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
U 2 JJ Z/ Attorneys 7 i v 2 y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wan'run J. nnowar, or LAnNnn, Kansas.
. sans-noon.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. Mnnowar, a citizen of the United -States, res ding at Larned, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Grain-Door, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present inventionis to provide a grain door for a car, which door may readily be slid to one side, when not in use, a compartment being provided. with-.
in the car, 'within which compartment the door is adapted to be received when not m use. 7 I
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby access may had to the compartment to aiford a cleaning of 1 the tracks, within the compartment, upon 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmental detail in vertical invention herein disclosed can be made with- 1n the scope of what is claimed without departin from the spirit of the invention.
In t e drawings,-Figure 1 shows in elevation, a portion of the inside of a car, equipped with the door constituting the subject-matter of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig.
section, showing the cooperation between certain of the door-securing elements; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmental section of the door.
the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of the side wall of a car, the numeral 2 indicating a rtion of the flooring. One door post is in mated by the numeral 3 andv the other door post in indicated by the numeral 4. The wainscoting of the car is denoted by the numeral 5, and the upper edge of the wainscoting 5 is connected with the side wall 1 of the car by means of a top plate 6, the flooring '2, the wamscotmg Specification amen remit. Application filed ma 8, 1912. Serial No. 695,938.
means preferably includes a pin 21' secured Patented a. 4,1913.
5, the top plate v6 and the outer wall 1 of the car defining a compartment, denoted by the numeral 7, the door post 3 extending across one end of the compartment 7. A
movable closure'S is provided, giving access no to the compartment 7, the closure 8 being hinged to the lower end of the wainscoting 5, as denoted by'the numeral 9. The door is denoted generallyby the numeral 10 and may be fashioned in any desired manner, it being preferable that the door 10 be an iron or metal structure. I adapted to slide through thedoor post 3, the post being slotted to permit the passage of the door, and a groove 11 is provided upon the door post 4, in which groove the 'free end of the door 10 is received, 0
prevent the door from bulging outwardly under the weight of the grain within the car. Preferably the door 10 comprises a plate 12, a top rail 14, a bottom rail 15, end bars 16, an intermediate bar 17 and cross braces 18. The door 10 is supported for sliding movement upon rollers 19 carried by shafts 2 0," the ends of the shafts 20 preferably being received within the bottom rails l5. The rollers 19 are adapted to move between the tracks'21 secured to the floor 2 within the compartment 7, the tracks 21 extendin out'of the compartment'and across t e doorway. to a. point adjacent the door post 4.- v 3 v A means is provided for holding the door housed within the compartment 7. "This to the door post 3 by means of a flexible element 23. The pin 21' is adapted to be inserted through an opening 24C in the top plate 6, the lower end of the pin 21 registering in an opening 25 which is fashioned in the upper edge of the *door 10. A por-' 'tion of one of the end bars 16 is cut away to define a recess 1'6 in'w-hich is located a lever :member 26 pivotally sup orted upon the I door as indicated at 27, t e inner end of the lever 26 terminating in a cam 27, adapted to engage the pin 21. I
The operation of the device is as fol-. lows :--The free end of-the lever 26 maybe swung outwardly, when the door 10 is within the compartment 7, thereb afiording a convenient handlexwhereby t e door may he slid across the doorway, the door moving between the tracks 21 and registering ultimately in the groove 11 as will be under- 0 The door 10 is stood readily. en the occasion for the use of the door 10 has passed, the door may be slid rearvvardly through the door post 3 into the compartment 7 When the door is thus housed Within the compartment, the pin 21 may be inserted through the opening 24 in the top plate 6, and into the openmg 25 in the door 10, the door 10 being thus held housed Within the compartment 7. When the lever 26 is swung into a depending position, the cam 28, Will engage with the pin 21 thusholding the pin fixed against displacement. Moreover, when the lever 26 is thus engaged With the pin, the lever cannot swing and clatter about.
If desired the door 10 may be equipped with an auxiliary door 50,-Which door 50 may be opened When the door 10 is closed, for the purpose of relieving the pressure of the grain against the door 10, so that the same may be moved to an open position.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a supporting structure provided with a compartment; a door mounted to slide into the compartment; a pin in'sertible into the compartwent, there being an opening in the door, in Which opening the pin is adapted to be received; and a lever pivoted to the door and adapted to protrude beyond the door to constitute a mea'nsfor moving the door, the
lever'having a cam portion adapted to engage the pin, to maintain the pin engaged with the door.
In testimony that l[ claim the foregoing asmy own, 1 have hereto aiiixed my eignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
