ELIHU DOUD, OF OSHKOSIL WISOONSINJ Letters Patent No. 105,184, dated July 12,1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIHU DOUD, of the city of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Machine for a Mower and Reaper Sickle- Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement.
Figure 2 is a front or top view of said machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the employment of a deflecting plate or board in front of the stone, as hereinafter described.
This deflecting plate or board is provided with four round iron rods, marked in the drawings, fig. 2, I I I I. Two of them are in close proximity with the grindstone, marked A, and one at each extreme end of the deflecting plate or board, marked 0, the stone cornmunicating with the shaft H, pulley E, belt D, pulley B, and shaft F, the whole being arranged as will be hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my machine, I will proceed to describe.
lar notch of the deflecting plate or board 0.-
The deflecting plate or board 0 is provided with four round iron rods, marked II I I, with the ends bent at right angles. These rods are fastened on the top of the deflecting plate G, one on each side, and in close proximity to the grindstone, and one on each extreme end of the deflecting plate or board 0. I These iron rods are to be raised a proper distance above the deflecting plate, so the sickle can be moved in grinding it, either backward or forward, or-right or left.
The sickle to be ground is to be placed upon the said iron rods I I I I, with the points of the sickle up- .ward. Then move the sickle up to the grindstone, so,
as to grind the heel of the sickle first; then down toward you, letting the points come down gradually on the stone.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' The sickle-sharpener, consisting of the stone A, and shaft H, deflecting plate or board 0, and rests or guides I I I I, constructed substantially as described.
.Dated January 12, A. D. 1870.
ELIHU DOUD.
