Be it known 'that l', lievi J. @n acilizen of the Unite' States, residing;` :it (idendora, in the county of Los Angeles and State oi California, lieve invented a certain Blades, oit which the following is a speci- 'tication My invention hes relation. to :1 machine for stropping razor blut es, and has reference more particularly 'to that class of blades commonly employed 'with safety razors, sind en importent object thereof is to provide e machine that 'will quickly and accurately resherpen the blades in a uniitform manner, provision beingl mode whereby the pressure of the blade against. the stropping members during the opereition is controlled. v

Fig. 2%- is aplan view, parte being broken away, and showing' ,in dette lines the blade carrier swung out to the position for inserting the blade. F i g. etis en end elevation ot the device. Fig. 5- S n torni ot blie carrier apted to carry a. double edged binde.
Referring specifically to the dmv ings in which sii'oilar reference .numerals indicate like ports, l is a. 'freine 'the shaft 2 on which is mounted s. handle 3 adapted to drive the device, the pinion Ll, end the stropping wheel 30. lThe pinion 4 ectuntes e train of gears 5, t3 and. "i, all oi equal diameter end pitch therewith. rlihe .Shaft bearing; pinion 7 also stri'up''iinw wlieel 3l. Pinions 4t, 5, il, and 7 boing or like diameter, it will be seen that both stropping wheel il() and stroppiug wheel Sl will be rotated exactly .in unison. Pinion f1 also meehes with en idle pinion 8 which in turn meshes within pinion 9 mounted on the shaft 10. Shaft 10 also carries n cani wheel Ill provided with e cam groove 12. l/Vithin said cem groove l). a cam stud lli engages. Seid cem stud 13 is carried on the arm 15 of e. bell erenk lever Whih is mounted in e bearing stud lll. The other arm 16 of said Y hell crank lever edjustably carries .an arm i7 which engages with a spring, or resilient arm 18, attached to a bearing 19 mounted on the shaft 20. The bearing 19 carries a pintie @heft 2l on which is mounted a been Specification of Letters Patent.

ing 2.2, within which a shaft 23 carrying' therazor blade engaging arms 24. and 25 is adopted to have limited movement. The razor blade engaging arms 24- and 25' are provided with a clanfxpin screw 2G, by means of which the razor illude 27 may be secured in position.
28 is a catch pivoted to the bearing 19 at 9.9, which operates to keep the razor l'iearinf;r arms-in operative position. The stropping wheels` 3() and 31 are )rovided on their outer rims with stropping 'ands 34.
represents a dog adapted to prevent back motion of the device.
The operation of the device is as follows: A razor blade havingr been secured within the razor blade carrying arms, pinions 4,5, 6, end 7 are set in rotation by operation of the crank 3, causing 'the stropping wheels 30 :ind 3lto be simultaneouely operated in opposite directions away from the point of support ol the blade 'to be sharpened. The idle pinion S also set in motion by pinion 4 carrying as it docs the Cain wheel 11, causes 'the arm 17 'to be reciprocated through the bell crankl lever arms l5 and 1G. This causes the razor blade carrying arms to be alternately raised and lowered, so that periodicelly each eide of the razor blade engages e stropping wheel. lt will be noted that pinion 9 is relatively much greater in diameter than pinion 8, thereby giving: :i slow reciprocetion to the blade carrying arms. The device is so constructed that the rer/.or blade impinges against each stre"oing v-.fheel during one revolution thereof at each reciprocation of the `blade carrier. The razor blade carrying;l arme nre given a slight. swivel motion on shaft 23 so as to compensate ior any unevenncss in the surface ot the stropping wheels. When it is desired to remove the stropper blade and insert another blade, 'the catch 28 is raised and the blade carrying,Y arms are swung' out on the shalt 21, thereby nmking the blade clamping screw 9,6 easy of access.
Having described my invention what .l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a stropping device, rotary stropping members, means for actuating thc same, a swiveled blade carrying member having au intermediate hinged joint, the said intermediate hinged joint, faciliteting'the turning of the blade out of position from between flle etropping members, a bell eranlr lever :for oscillating said blade carrying' member, ptman connecting the lever with the blade carrying member, a resilient member being 5 ointerposed between said pitman and sald blade carrying member, a cam for actuating the Said lever, the said cam having a` peripheral cam path adapted to engage one end o" the lever, and means for turning the said lever whereby a positive rocking movement is imparted to the blade carrying member.
2. ln a stropping device, rotary stropping drums,- a rocking member, a swivel blade holder on said rocking member adapted to present a blade to said drums, an actuating cam Wheel, a bell crank lever operated thereby, and a pitman for communicating movement from the lever to said rocking member.
A stropping device, comprising rotary stropping drums, a rocking member, a hinge member pivoted thereto and adapted to eX- tend at rightangles to the axis of said rooking member, a swivel member carried by said' hinged member and having a blade securing means mounted thereon, and means for positively rocking the said rocking member.
4. A stroppng' device comprising rotary stropping drums,l a rocking member, a swivel blade holder on said rocking member, a cam, means interposed between thel cam rler, a blade being' brought alternately 'into' is rocked, a bell crank lever leaving an op erative connection with the rocking blade carrier, and @am means for operating the bell crank lever.
A blade sharpening machine including a pair of Sharpening rolls, a rocking; blade carrier, a blade holder upon tbe blade carrier, a blade being brought alternately into engagement 'with the two rolls as the carrier is rocked,.an arm projecting' from the blade carrier, a member provided With a cam groove, a lever pivoted between its ends and provided at one end with means Jfor engaging the cam groove, and an operative connection between the opposite end of the lever and the arm of the blade carrier.
In Witness that l claim the foregoing l have hereunto subscribed name this 14C day of April, 1909.
