JOHN MILLER, OF LEWISTON, IDAHO.
PLOW-WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 28, 1912.
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Serial No. 717,587.
To all whom it may cc nccrn Be it known that I, J OHN lVlILLiiR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewis ton, in the county of Nez Force and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful lm provements in Plow-\Vheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheels for plows and the like, and one object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for preventing the wheel bearing from being clogged with sand and dirt to the detriment of the operation.
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved axle collar and means for mounting said axle collar and the dirt guard adjustably in position.
\Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as thcnature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of an axle and a wheel equipped with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The axle 1, which is made of steel, consists of a rod or bar of circular cross section.
2 represents a collar having a bore 3 to fit snugly upon the axle, the outer end of said bore being enlarged to form a chamber 1. The inner end of the collar is cut off to form a recess, whereby the under portion of the axle is exposed, said recess having a shoulder 5 which is apcrtured for the passage of a clip 6. A sand or dirt guard 7 is provided, said guard consisting of a sheet of metal or other suitable material shaped to fit upon the upper side of the collar, said shield being apertured for the passage of the clip 6, and said shield being secured in position by means of the nuts 8 on said clip. The latter, it will be seen, will thus serve to secure the collar upon the axle and the shield 7 upon the collar.
The wheel 9 has a hub 10 containing an axle box 11, a portion of which extends beyond the hub and is accommodated in the chamber 4 formed by the enlarged portion of the bore extending through the collar. The axle box 11 has an annular flange 12 that abuts on the outer face of the collar 2. The sand or mud guard 7 it will be seen, projects above the inner end of the wheel hub, thus protecting the flange 12 and the joint between the flange and the collar from sand and dirt. The chamber 4 may be made of sufficient dimensions to constitute a lubricant receptacle which will easily contain sufficient lubricant to last for several days.
It will be seen that by this invention I have provided a simple and efficient. device whereby an axle consisting of an ordinary round steel rod may be fitted to receive wheels and to protect the bearing from grit and dirt.
The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device is easily applied and assembled for operation.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
1. An axle rod, a collar having a bore to fit said rod, said collar being providedwith a recess at its inner end exposing a portion of the axle and with vertical apertures, a clip engaging said apertures to secure the collar on the axle rod, and a shield engaged and held by the clip and constituting a dirt guard.
2. A collar having a bore enlarged at its outer end, an axle rod extending therethrough, a shield shaped to fit on top of the collar and extending beyond the outer end thereof, a clip extending through the collar In testimony whereof I-afliX my signature and shield to assemble the same with the in presence of tWo Witnesses.
axle rod, and a Wheel having an axle box JOHN MILLER. projecting Within the enlarged portion of Vvitnesses: the bore of the collar and having a flange JAMES KENT,
abutting on the outer face of said collar. JASPER N. MENNEE.
