Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
F. G. GOFFIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FIRE AND BURGLAR PROOF SAFE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,517, dated February 14, 1854:; Reissued April 25, 18541, No. 263.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. C. GorFiN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Safes, Bank-Vault Doors, &c., whereby they are rendered fireproof and burglarproof, and which I term Reliance Crystal Safes and Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, which drawing is avvertical section of a safe constructed according to my improved plan.
The nature of my invention consists in filling the space between the two casings of a safe or vault door with glass or slag when in a vitrified state, for the purpose of ren dering the safe or door fireproof, and also proof against the efforts of burglars; glass being a poor conductor of heat, and so hard as to effectually prevent the operation of boring or drilling through the sides of the safe or door. 7
In the accompanying drawing of a safe, A, represents the external casing, which is of metal; and B, is the internal casing, also of metal; a space of requisite width being between the two casings. The two casings may be constructed and secured the proper [distance apart, in the same manner as the ordinary fireproof safes in present use.
C, is the glass with which the space between the two casings, A, B, is filled. The glass may be poured into the space between the casings in a molten state; or thick plates of glass may be formed and placed in the space therein in this manner filling the space as nearly as may be with solid glass through which it is practically impossible to drill or bore.
Thick glass plates may be used and an air space left between the plates and the inner casing. In this case the plates may be held or secured to the outer casing by various modes which are so obvious that they need not be specified.
By using the glass filling, all moisture is expluded, or prevented from entering the sa e.
Glass being a poor conductor of heat and a very hard substance the safe is consequently made burglar and fire proof.
I do not claim forming safes or doors, with a double casing, for fire-proof safes are at present constructed in that manner but,
Having described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The use of glass, or slag, in a vitrified state, for filling the space between the two casings of a safe or vault door; the glass or vitrified slag being poured molten into the spaceforainsertred in plates, which may be secured to the outer casing in any proper manner, and an air space left around the inner casing, as herein set forth.
