SHIPPING APPARATUS FOR GILL-NETS.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN h/ICGAW, J r., of the town of Kincardine, in the county of Bruce, in the Province of Ontario, Canada,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Apparatus for Gill-Nets, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shipping apparatus for gill nets, andthe object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus whereby a net may be readily drawn aboard ship with a minimum amount of labor and such an apparatus as may be readily used to ship the nets either from one side of the boat or the other and it consists essentially of a rotatable horizontally disposed drum like member having stationary lower and vertically movable upper jaws designed to successively close to grip the lines of the net as the apparatus revolves, so as to draw the net inboard as hereinafter more particularly explained.

Fig. 4-. is an enlarged perspective detail showing the brackets and gripping jaws of the device. Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation with part in section of the brackets and gripping jaws shown in detail.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is a portion of the ships deck and B is the gunwale.
C is a vertical supporting stud provided with a suitable base C secured to the deck A. The stud C is provided with a reduced upper end C and a further reduced sided portion C extending upwardly from the portion C D is the base plate of the apparatus provided with a central hub D through which extends the portion C of the stud shaft C. The base of the hub D rests upon the shoulder C formed between the reduced portion 0 and the main portion 0.
E are a series of brackets secured to the base plate D and arranged around the edge and spaced equi-distant apart and having V-shaped vertical guiding grooves E at each side thereof. The brackets E are formed with flanges L which rest upon and are bolted or otherwise suitably secured to Specification of Letters Patent.

The lower ends of the stems F are threaded and provided with suitable nuts and washers F.
F are compression springs extending between the nuts and washer F and the lower base plate D.
F are ins extending inwardly from the movable aws F and F are rollers journaled upon the pins F G is a hub having a central opening Gr having a circular portion Gr and a sided portion G The circular portion of the center opening of the hub G fits the reduced portion C of the stud C.
H is a washer provided with a sided central boss H fitting the sided portion G of the central opening of the hub G and having a sided central opening H fitting the sided portion C of the stud C.
I is a cam ring connected by spokes I to the hub G and having a segmental opening I. The cam ring I is provided with a gradually inclined portion extending from the side 2 of the opening I to the point 3 and a steep inclined portion extending from the side 4 to the point 5. It will be understood that the cam ring fits to the inside of the brackets E and the stationary and movable jaws F and F respectively and that the rollers F successively come into engagement with the gradually inclined portion of the cam ring I. The hub D of the base D is provided with a face gear D meshing with the pinion D mounted upon a suitable driving shaft D". By this means my apparatus is rotated.
K is a roller journaled in brackets K 'secured to the part outside of the gunwale of the boat. The brackets K are provided with T-arms K extending to the periphery of the roller K for a purpose which will hereinafterappear.
J is an annular trough extending around my apparatus and provided at its upper side with a platform J extending in proximity to the roller K and a delivery spout J 2 having a suitable receptacle.
Having described the principal parts in volved in my invention I shall briefly describe the operation of the same.
The ends of the lines of the gill net are drawn up so as to enter between the opening jaws. The driving shaft D is then thrown into engagement so as to rotate my apparatus. As it revolves the rollers F pass onto the stationary inclined portion extending from l to 5 down which they are carried by the tension of the springs F thereby carrying the movable jaw into engagement with the stationary jaw, so as to grip the lines of the gill net therebetween. As the apparatus continues to revolve the rollers pass the opening in the cam ring extending between the points 4 and 2 during which time they are held closed. The rollers then successively engage with the gradually inclined portion of the cam ring I extending from the point 2 to the point 3. The rollers F gradually ascend the inclined portion, thereby moving the movable jaws against the compression of the springs F thereby again opening the jaw and releasing the lines. The net is gradually drawn over the rollers K with the fish thereon and fed through the spout J into a suitable receptacle. The arms K serve to guide the net in proper alinement on the roller K, so that the lines will always enter between the stationary and movable jaws F and F respectively.
When it is desired to ship a net from the opposite side of the boat all that it is necessary to do is to remove my apparatus to the required side. I then release the cam ring I by lifting off the washer H and the hub G. The cam ring may then be re versed so as to operate the movable jaws in a similar way to that previously de scribed and as the apparatus rotates in the opposite direction feed the net inboard on the opposite side of the boat.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. An apparatus for drawing gill nets inboard comprising a circular suitably supported rotatable base plate, a series of stationary jaws secured at the edge of the base plate in proximity to the periphery thereof and suitably spaced apart, brackets located between each pair of jaws and having verticalguiding grooves, movable jaws located above the stationary jaws and having tongues fitting the guiding grooves of the brackets, spring means for normally holding the stationary and movable jaws together, so as to successively grip the lines of the net, and means for successively separating the stationary and movable jaws apart so as to free the lines of the net, as and for the purpose specified.
2. An apparatus for drawing gill nets inboard comprising a gripping member provided with a series of stationary gripping jaws and intervening vertical guide-Ways, movable jaws located above the stationary jaws and betweenthe guide-ways, stems extending from the movable jaws and through the stationary aws having suitable enlargements at their lower ends, and compression springs interposed between such enlargements and the stationary jaws and means for successively opening the jaws against the pressure of the aforesaid springs, so as to successively free the lines of the net, as and for the purpose specified.
3. An. apparatus for drawing gill nets inboard comprising a central stud having a reduced upper portion and rotatable member supported thereby having peripheral stationary and movable jaws arranged around the same, projections extending inwardly from the movable jaws, a face cam ring coacting therewith having a central hub having a sided central opening having a cylindrical lower portion designed to fit the aforesaid supporting stud and extend around the sided extension of the supporting stud, and a washer having a sided boss designed to fit within the sided portion of the opening of the hub and having a sided central opening designed to fit the sided extension of the supporting stud, as and for the purpose specified.
