BENJAMIN F. HINIKER, OF MARICOPA, CALIFORNIA.
MEANS FOR HOLDING PIPE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HINI- iti-za, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maricopa, in the county of Kern, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Holding Pipe for the Pur ose of Threading or Jointilw the Same or or any other Puriose; andrl do declare the following to be a ull, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part. of this application.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in means for holding pipe for the pur ose of threading or jointing the same, or or any other purpose, the oiject of the invention being to produce a friction gripping means which can be readily used to engage 0r disengage the pipe in a rapid and effective manner.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which 1t is designed.
'lhese objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a )erusal of the following specifications and c aim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line w-w of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, I first provide a base supporting member 1 provided with a central orifice 2. Mounted on said base member 1 on cach side of said orifice l are pairs of spaced journal boxes 3 and between each pair of journal boxes is a bearing 4 havin curved grooves 5 for the purpose hereina ter specified.
Journaled in the journal boxes 3 and resting in the grooves 5 are shafts 6 having Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled January 23,1912.
Patented Jan. 28, 1911i.
Serial No. 672,856.
ifounted on shafts G are arms 10 disposed between the larings 'i and the journal boxes 3 and projecting out over the orifice 2 und provided with pins 11 in their outer ends. On each pin are pivotally mounted jaw members having central recesses 13. lhese jaw members l2 are so mounted on pins 1l :is to at all times keep balanced in a vertical position.
iVhcn it is desired to grip the pipe 111 for any purpose, a wrench or other tool is applied to one of the square shoulder: 7 and the corresponding shaft is then turned, which through the gears 8 and 9 turns the othershaft and causes the arms 10 to move upward, thus lifting the jaws 12 apart. The pipe is then inserted into the recess 11i and the shafts (l turned in a reverse direction, which action brings the jaws 12 together against the plie ll, thus holding it in a tight frictional Contact.
lf desired iiulependent sleeve sections 15 may be inserted in the recess 13 and provided with inner serrated edges 1G to form a better grip for the pi je. Also if desired these sections 15 may )e made larger or snuiller or a plurality may be inserted, one within the other, according to whether or not u larger or snuiller pipe is to be gripped.
lf it. is desired to operate the siafts (i through a floor or other place, suitable gear connections could be made with either one of the years 8 or t).
lhe )carin fs 4 hohl the shafts (l steady and prevent t um from bending or breaking with the strain.
l"rom the foregoing description it will be readily seen that. l have produced such a deviee as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
\Vhile this specification sets forth in dctail the. present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I clnim ns new und useful nnd desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising n bnse member, two shafts journnled on stud base member et u distance apart., gears on euch of said shafts, such gears intermeshng with enchv other, the opposite ends of snid shafts being squared to receive n tool, n pnir of arms on each shaft., e pin carried by each pair of arms, and n jaw member balanced vertically on euch pin, :is described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
