r. This rod is adapted to be carried downwardly in front of the lever 19 so as to prevent the same from swinging in a direction to apply the brake. The upper end of the rod has a bend 32 which enters a recess 33 made in'thetop edge of the side wall of the wagon box as shown in Fig. 3. When this-bend is within the recess, the rod is in elevated position, and its: lower end is out of the path of the flever 19. I An adjustable connection between the rod 27 and the lever 19 is also had by providing the latter with a plurality of openings as shown in Fig. 2, with any one of which openings the rod may be connected.
A' spring 38 is interposed between and beam 41 under certain conditions, said lever having a bolt 42 connected to one end thereof and adapted to enter an opening within a beam 43 similar to the beam 31 hereinbeforedescribed. This bolt is connected to the short arm of said lever while the long'arm of said lever has a chain 4.4 or the like extending upwardly therefrom whereby the lever can be swung upon its fulcrum so as to force the bolt 42 into the opening in the beam 43. When the bolt is thus positioned, the brake beam 41 is held against movement relative to the beam 43 and the vehicle can be backed without the application of the brake.
It is to be understood that openings may be formed within the" rod 27 at regular in tervals, as indicated at -51 so as to permit said rod to be connected to the level- 19 no matter what the dis'ance may be between said lever and the el unent 23.

L'The combination with a vehicle body and running gear, and a neck yoke, of a swinging brake beam carried by said gear, a lever pivoted to the gear, a connection between one end of the lever and the brake beam, a movable member carried by the. tongue at its outer end, a connection between said member and the other end of the lever, 9
a connection between the movable member and, the neck yoke, a cross bar carried by the running gear between the brake beam and the lever, said cross bar having an opening, a rod mounted insaid opening and adjust-able to extend at its lower end in front of the last mentioned end of the lever, the upper end of the rod having a downward return bend extending into a recess in the top edge of the side wall of the vehicle body. 2.
