Description

- L. MYERS. HORSE HAY RAKE.
' Patented July 5', 1870.
I l/ VViinemes, [Dz/6727b),
LORENZO MYERS,OF LUDLOWVILI ljl 7 Letters Patent No.-105,117, dated July 5, 1870; aniedcted June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE HAY-RAKES.
m I The schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZO Mrnns, of Ludlowville, in the county of Tompkins, and in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Rakes; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same,
wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to that class 0! horse-rakes termed the spring-tooth rake, and its nature consists in certain modifications in the details of the same, whereby the rakerhead is raised or dumped, and its load discharged by the power of the team, which is made available'by means of a friction-wheel, attached to the axle, and surrounded by a metallic clamp strap, operated by a lever, in the. manner hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention andi'orms a part of the specification thereof, and in which corresponding parts are illustrated by similar letters- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horse-rake with my invention applied thereto.
Figures 2 and 3 are views in detail, illustrating my invention with a greaterdegree of particularity.
The construction and relative arrangement of the component parts constituting my invention are as follows, to wit:
One of thewheels, A, upon which the machine is transported, is secured rigidly to the axle B, thereby causing the same to revolve when the rake is in motion.
The teeth are attached to thimbles placed loosely upon the axle, and the friction-wheel or drum, 0, is keyed rigidly thereto, at or near the center thereof.
The circular flange D has a circular perforation'at its center, through which the axle passes, and is bolted to the rider-bar E in such a manner 'as to assume a position collateral to that of the friction-wheel hereinbefore mentioned.
To the projection F, on the npper'side of the said annular flange, is pivoted the lever H.
Around the friction-wheel B there is fitted a strap or band I, the ends of which are attached to the said lever.
In front of the axle B there is secured to the thills a cross-bar or foot-board, to which the foot-lever, K, is secured by means of staples.
To the said foot-lever is attached a rod, L, which connects it with the lever H, to which the said rod is also attached at a point above the pivot.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The friction-wheel, being rigidly attached, as aforesaid, to the revolving axle, will rotate with the same when the machine is drawn forward. And when it is desirable to discharge the rake, it is only necessary to tip the lever H forward, by the hand, or by means of the foot-lever K, or'both, which causes the strap I to gripe the friction-wheel c, and the rake-head to partially revolve about the axle, and discharge its load.
Having thus described the nature, construction and operation of my invention, I will indicate whatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clause:
I clain1 Rake-head, when raised or dumped by a frictionwheel, and a band or strap encircling the same, as herein specified and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of November, 1869.
\ LORENZO MYERS.
