Be it known that I, MARTIN A. LArHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield,'in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing and Treatment of Constipation and Piles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, .suchas will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful devices for use in preventing constipation and in the prevention and treatment of hemorrhoids or piles; I

The invention has for its objects, among others, the provision of anon-porous device of a size and form adapting it for use in massaging the rectum, the surface of the device being provided with spirally disposed grooves so formed and arranged relative thereto as to afford a ready and efficient means for evenly distributing the dressing used, over the walls of the rectum and at the same time permit of a uniform massaging of the walls of the organ.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

In Fig. 6 of the drawings'I have shown a modification of the device, intended for use in the treatment of mild cases, which do not require the extensive massa ing necessary 1n chronic cases or those of ong standmg.

It will be noted that the grooves consist of two sets each set winding spirally around the cone, each in opposite directions to the direction of the other set, and that each groove has one of its side edges upon a line substantially at right angles to the length of the cone, while the opposite side edge of the groove is formed at an oblique angle to the first mentioned side edge, and that the edges of the flanges are provided with similar grooves. I

. From the foregoing description, the use of the device will be readily understood. The

stem is first withdrawn from one fourth to r one half inch from the apex end of the cone; the distance depending upon the amount of Vaseline or other dressing to he used. By the use of the filler, Vaseline is supplied to both the straight and spiral surface grooves as well as to the bore and cleft. The device is then inserted two or three, or more inches into the rectum, turning it to the right in inserting. The stem is then closed; thus expelling vaselinealong the walls of-the rectum, from the longitudinal groovesof the device, while at the upper part of the rectum.

transferred from the spiral grooves and uniformly distributed over the walls of the rectum. F urther rotary or longitudinal movement of the device will serve to effect a uniform massage of the entire membrane; thus inducing its peristaltic activity. The turning of the cone causes one set of its spirally disposed grooves to move the dressing slightly upward, while the opposite set of grooves move it downward and the straight grooves move it directly forward; thus insuring the application of the dressing 'to every point upon the surface of the rectum walls. 7

Having thus described my invention, What I claim to be new and desire, to secure by Letters Patent, is j 1. A device for treatment of the rectum, the same comprising a conical body portion having a longitudinal bore and having its surface provided "with oppositely inclined,

spirally arranged grooves and with longitudinal grooves, arranged to operate substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

2. As an improved article of manufacture,

bore, and longitudinal grooves, as described, and a movable section adapted to be moved within the bore of the cone longitudinally thereof, said movable member being provided with a knob or operating handle, substantially as described.
