WATER AND SLOP CARRIIIJR.
Application filed May 7,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Jan. 1 M513.
1912. Seriai No, 695,714.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. Horse, 91H zen of the United States, residing at Dleterich, in the county of Efiingham and State of Illinois; have invented certagin new and useful Improvements in VVatei' and Slop .Carriers, ,of which the following is a spoolfication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in water and slop carriers, and the object of my invention is to provide a carrier mounted upon wheels and capable of supporting one or more pails or buckets.
A. further object of my invention is to provide means fornormally maintaining the floor or platform of the carrier in horizontal position when the carrier at rest, said means consisting of a foot capable of "H'iiin'g swung into engagement with the o ground.
A further object of my inventionis to provides cover which is swingingly' mounted upon the frame of the carrier and adapted to be swung over and clamped upon the upper ends of the pails supported upon the 'platform to prevent their disengagement from the platform and the slopping of the water or other contents from the pails. And a still further object of my invention is to provide means for locking the cover in operative posit-ion, said means being adapt'ed and arranged to swing the supporting foot into imperative position upon the locking ofthe cover.
With these'and other objectsin view, my invention will be more fully descrihed,-illus trated in the accompanying drawing and then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form apart of this application.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved watenor slop carrier; Fig. 2 is a central, vertical section, showing the relative position of the supporting foot and locking lever.
' Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The preferred embodiment of my invention includes a floor or platform made of any material and of any size, butrpreferablyformed of wood and including a substantially rectangular shaped frame 10 and a plurality of longitudinally extending slats ll extending between the end members of the frame and forming the floor. As shmrn. these slats are spaced *psrt" and are also spaced below the co portion of the frame, whereby the in me extends above-the floor to provide a marginal flange or wall.
Extending vertically upward from the rear endportions of the frame. ere iangers 12 including standard f directed arms 1%. Br at their lower ends to t tions of the platform and e and upwardly, being to ards 13 and arms 1"} to iii-ni hangers thereby formed. The these braces, as shown, extend a t distance beyond the hang nected. by a bar 16 forming the h m. carrier.
connected Secured in. the spaces ljaetuecn the hangers trally with a forwardly directed pin 21 and is notchedat one end as shown at The cover includes a substantialiy gular body member 23, preferably for wood lined with heavy canvas or rubber 24 and supported upon the forward portion of a-substantially rectangular shaped frame 25,
the rear portion of which extendscheyond 1-;
the body member of the cover. The side members 26 of this frame are perforated adjacent their rear ends to receive a rod 27' which is passed through the perforations f the side members and through corresp length of the hanger arms 14.
tween the hangers and may be swung into parallel spaced relation to the floor or platform or swung upwardly untii its rear portion engages against the rear face of the axle when further upward swinging is prevented.
The central portions of the front and rear.
members of the frame 10, as well as the eentral portionsof the slats l1,are perforated ing perforations formed int(er-mediate-thev Bye-his means, the cover is swingingly piounted-;1be-' into operative to receive a rod or shaft 28 upon the forward end of which is mounted an arcuate arm 29, the free end of which is shaped to provide a foot 30 for engagement with the ground when the shaft is turned in one direction. This arm 29 is so proportioned as to co-act with the wheels when in lowered position to support the carrier horizontally. Secured by one end to the opposite end of the shaft 28, is a hand lever 31 which may he formed of wood or metal preferred and which extends upwardly and rearwardly to bear between its ends against the forward face of the brace bar 20. This lever is preferably somewhat resilient in order that it may seat in the' notch 22 when swung to that end'of the carrier. The upper porlion of the lever is reduced or cut-away to forma shoulder 32 which, in vertical position of the lever,
25 to liold the same in lowered position, this shoulder being so proportioned that when the lever is seated in the notch 22, the frame willbe released and the cover may be raised. The arms 29 and lever 31 are so set upon the opposite ends of the shaft 28 that the foot 30 is held in inoperative position when thelever is looking the cover in operative position, while the foot engages with the ground when the lever is swung out of operative position into the notch 22.
As previously stated, the floor or platform of the carrier may be made in any size desired and the-cover will, of course, correspond substantially in size to "the floor. In practice, I have preferred to construct the floor in such a manner as to provide for the support of a pair of pails or buckets which are held against disengagement from the floor by the upwardly directed edges of the frame 10.
The hanger; 12 are so proportioned that when the Fails or buckets are positioned upon the iilwrand the cover lowered upon the same. the cover will extend parallel to the floor and will be clamped in close engagement upon the open upper ends of the buckets by the engagement of the shoulder 32 of the lever beneath the rear member of the frame 25 of the cover. The cover will therefogeasist in preventing the displacement of the buckets and will also effectually close the same to prevent any slopping of the contents.
In operation. the lever is swung to seat in the notoli gg2, thereby swinging the foot 30 positiont'o support the carrier. The pails or buckets are then positioned upon the platform. and the cover lowered into position. The operator then grasps the bar'or handle 16 with one hand and with the other swings the lever 31 to clamp the cover in engagement with the pails and to swingthe foot out of engageengages beneath the lower face of the rear member of the cover frame ment with the ground,'the movement of the lever being limited by the pin 21.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and effective form of water carrier in which the pails are firmly held in place and covered to prevent their contents from slopping'out during transportation.
It will further be apparent that I have provided means for normally and stably supporting the platform when not in use, said supporting means being so arranged that the clamping of the cover in operative position will swing the, support into inoperative position to permit the movement of the carrier.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A water carrier including a wheeled frame, a platform supported by said frame and having an upwardly extending mar 'ginal retaining wall, a cover hinged upon the frame and having a downwardly depending marginal retaining wall, said cover being adaptedto swing into parallel relation to the platform with the free edge of its retaining wall spaced above the free edge of the retaining wall of the platform, and means for locking the cover in position.
2. A water carrier including a wheeled platform, a movable foot for holding the platform against swinging movement, a hinged cover, and means for simultaneously swinging the foot into inoperative position and locking he co .'er in operative position. 3. A water carrier including a wheeled. platform, a hinged co er movable into parallel spaced relation to the platform, a movable foot for normally holding the platform against movement, means for locking the cover in operative position, and means operated by said last mentioned means for swinging the foot into inoperative position. 4.-A water carrier including a wheeled platform, a hinged cover movable into parallel spaced relation to the platform, a movable foot for normally holding the platform against movement, a lever for locking the cover in operative position, and means operable by said lever for swinging the foot out of operative position.

6. A water carrier including a platform. hangers carried by the rear end portions of the platform, diagonally extending braces secured to the ends of the platform and to a the hangers, transverse bars connecting said braces, an axle carried by the hangers, bearin wheels carried bv said ax1e, a cover swingingly mounted between the hangers, and means for locking the cover in operative position. i v
T. A water carrier including a platform, hangers carried by the rear end portions of the platform, braces diagonally connecting the ends of the platform and hangers, transversely extending bars connecting said braces, one of said bars forming a handle, an axle carried by said hangers, bearing wheels carried by said axle, a cover swingingly mounted between the hangers and movable into position over the platform and with its rear end in parallel spaced relation with one of the transverse braces. a shaft the rear end of the cover and the adjzfeerflbrace, said hand lever being provided with a shoulder for clamping engagement with the cover and said brace being provided with a stop pin for limiting the movement of the lever.
