Be it known that I, PAUL NickoLAUs S'rn- Prunus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Tongs, of which the. following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ash tongs and more particularly to a device of this character which comprises hinged bucket sections having handles secured thereto to manipulate the same, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character whereby the ashes or hot coals can be removed from a stove, and the device is particularly7 adapted for use with heating stoves having no side doors and from which the ashes have to be taken out through the top of the stove.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the saine reference characters.

In forming the two hinged bucket-sec tions l and Q, I employ two substantially rectangular pieces of sheet metal having their longitudinal edges bent to form the body portions 3 and the side portions 4L. Slits 5 are cut from the lower end of the sections upwardly, at the intersection of the side and body port-ions, and the lower ends of the body portions are bent inwardly to form the downwardly inclined bottom portions 6. The lower ends of the side portions are cut away, bent back onto the lower ends of the body portions and securely fastened thereto by means of the rivets 7. The upper ends of the side portions are cut away to form the inclined portions 8 which allow the bucket sect-ions to swing to an open position, said sections being hingedly secured together'. at the upper inner corner of the sid-e portions, by means of the rivets 9.

'.l'wo handles l0 and l1 are provided, having one of their ends flattened out as shown at l2 and secured to the upper ends of the body portions 3 by means of the rivets 13. In securing these handles to the body portions they are to be arranged upon opposite, sides of the longitudinal center of said body portions, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow'the handles to swing past each other when opening the sections 1 and Q. The outer ends of the handles are curved to form hand grips for manipulating said handles.

In using my device for removing ashes from the stove, the sections l and 2 are inserted in the stove body and the handles are then swung to force the sections to an open position as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The lower ends of the sections are then pressed downwardly into the ashes and the handles swung back to their normal position to close the sections and remove the ashes contained between them.

This device may be used in carrying live coals from one stove to another when starting tires, and it may also be used in transplant-ing small plants by carrying them from place to place with a small quantity of dirt about the roots.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will. be seen that I have provided a simple and eflicient device of this character which is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

llilhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.

I claim:
