Definitions
- This invention relates tothose portions of a watch which comprise the pendant and the bow whereby the watch is attached to a chain or the like, and is intended to overcome the danger of accidental separation' of the bow from the pendant which exists in watch cases of the usual construction, in which the pivotal bearings at the ends of the how are very short and are merely sprung into correspondingly shallow recesses in the pendant by slightly spreading the end portions of the bow, so that the pendant is liable to be disconnected from the bow if a strong pull or strain is put on the watch.
- My invention which overcomes this defect by providing a form of connection between the bow and the pendant which is absolutely secure against accidental separation, is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawing, in which:
- Figure 1 shows the bow in side elevation and the associated parts in central vertical section
- Fig. 2 is a plan viewshowing the under side of the cap piece hereinafter described
- Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating a slight modification.
- FIG. 1 indicates the pendant, which has a flat top surface
- 3 indicates a fiatbottomed cap piece, which has a central opening 4: and is clamped to the top of the pendant by means of a hollow bolt 5 screwed into the pendant and having an enlarged head adapted to bear upon the top of the cap piece, as shown in Fig. 1.
- Extending inward from the outer edges of the combined cap piece and pendant at diametrically opposite points are cylindrical bearings 6 arranged in axial alinement with each other and terminating at their inner ends in cylindrical recesses 7 of larger diameter, these bearings and recesses being formed one-half in the top of the pendant and the other half in the bottom of the cap piece, as shown in Fig. 2.
- the how 8 has its end portions turned inward toward each other and arranged in axial alin-ement, and at its ends it is provided with heads 9 adapt ed to lit the recesses 7 above described, while adjacent to said heads the end portions of the bow are formed and arranged to fit and rest simultaneously in the cylindrical bearings 6, so that after the parts have been assembled as shown in the drawings the bow is absolutely prevented by its headed ends from being disconnected from the pendant unless the bolt 5 is first unscrewed and the cap piece 3 removed.
- the crown for operating the winding stem of the watch is shown at 10, and has a downwardly-extending shank which rotates in the hollow bolt 5 and is adapted to be attached at its lower end to the upper end of the winding stem.
- Said bolt 5 therefore, cannot be unscrewed from the pendant either intentionally or afccidentally without first removing the crown 10, which in the form shown in Fig. 1 is recessed on its under side to receive the top of the bolt, so that said crown can rest upon the top of the cap piece 3 and wholly conceal the bolt from view, thus giving the parts a finished appearance.
- Fig. 3 I have shown a form of my invention in which the pendant 2 and the cap piece 3 are oblong, as contrasted with the circular configuration of the top of the pendant 2 illustrated in Fig. 1, and the bow 8 is also oblong, the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 being otherwise like that shown in Fig. 2 except that the top of the bolt 5' and the bottom of the crown 10 are set into the top of the cap piece 3 and the exposed portion of said cap piece is shaped and finished in conformity with the top of the pendant, the diameter of the crown being less than the major axis of the top of the pendant. in each arrangement relatively long bearings for the ends of the bow are provided, thus promoting the durability of the parts.
- My improvements above described are particularly useful in connection with watches of the character set forth in my copending application Serial No. 632,312, filed on the 10th day of June, 1911, from which watches the sleeve usually contained in the pendant of a watch is omitted, so that the pendant may be made much smaller than is the case where such a sleeve is employed.
- Such watches may therefore have a small pendant and still provide the desired length of bearing for the ends of the bow, the appearance of a watch being greatly improved by the employment of a pendant oi small diameter.
- My invention is applicable to watches in general, however, and may be also employed in connection with locket-s and the like, in which case the bolt 5 need not necessarily be hollow, since a crown is not an essential part of a locket.
- I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a pendant of a cap piece resting on the top of the same and making a tight joint therewith at the periphery of the meeting faces of said parts, a headed bolt passing through the cap piece and screwed into the top of the pendant, said cap piece and pendant being jointly provided with cylindrical bearings located at opposite ends of a diam-etrical line and terminating in enlarged recesses, and a bow having its end portions journa-led in and completely inclosed circumferentially by said bearings and provided with heads located in said recesses.

HENRY W. MATALENE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PENDANT AND BOW CONSTRUCTION FOR WATCHES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21,1913.
Application filed September 20, 1911. Serial No. 650,386.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. MATaLnx-n, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendant and Bow Construction forlVatches and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tothose portions of a watch which comprise the pendant and the bow whereby the watch is attached to a chain or the like, and is intended to overcome the danger of accidental separation' of the bow from the pendant which exists in watch cases of the usual construction, in which the pivotal bearings at the ends of the how are very short and are merely sprung into correspondingly shallow recesses in the pendant by slightly spreading the end portions of the bow, so that the pendant is liable to be disconnected from the bow if a strong pull or strain is put on the watch. My invention, which overcomes this defect by providing a form of connection between the bow and the pendant which is absolutely secure against accidental separation, is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the bow in side elevation and the associated parts in central vertical section; Fig. 2 is a plan viewshowing the under side of the cap piece hereinafter described; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating a slight modification.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, 2 indicates the pendant, which has a flat top surface, and 3 indicates a fiatbottomed cap piece, which has a central opening 4: and is clamped to the top of the pendant by means of a hollow bolt 5 screwed into the pendant and having an enlarged head adapted to bear upon the top of the cap piece, as shown in Fig. 1. Extending inward from the outer edges of the combined cap piece and pendant at diametrically opposite points are cylindrical bearings 6 arranged in axial alinement with each other and terminating at their inner ends in cylindrical recesses 7 of larger diameter, these bearings and recesses being formed one-half in the top of the pendant and the other half in the bottom of the cap piece, as shown in Fig. 2. The how 8 has its end portions turned inward toward each other and arranged in axial alin-ement, and at its ends it is provided with heads 9 adapt ed to lit the recesses 7 above described, while adjacent to said heads the end portions of the bow are formed and arranged to fit and rest simultaneously in the cylindrical bearings 6, so that after the parts have been assembled as shown in the drawings the bow is absolutely prevented by its headed ends from being disconnected from the pendant unless the bolt 5 is first unscrewed and the cap piece 3 removed.
The crown for operating the winding stem of the watch is shown at 10, and has a downwardly-extending shank which rotates in the hollow bolt 5 and is adapted to be attached at its lower end to the upper end of the winding stem. (Not shown.) Said bolt 5, therefore, cannot be unscrewed from the pendant either intentionally or afccidentally without first removing the crown 10, which in the form shown in Fig. 1 is recessed on its under side to receive the top of the bolt, so that said crown can rest upon the top of the cap piece 3 and wholly conceal the bolt from view, thus giving the parts a finished appearance.
In Fig.
My improvements above described are particularly useful in connection with watches of the character set forth in my copending application Serial No. 632,312, filed on the 10th day of June, 1911, from which watches the sleeve usually contained in the pendant of a watch is omitted, so that the pendant may be made much smaller than is the case where such a sleeve is employed. Such watches may therefore have a small pendant and still provide the desired length of bearing for the ends of the bow, the appearance of a watch being greatly improved by the employment of a pendant oi small diameter. My invention is applicable to watches in general, however, and may be also employed in connection with locket-s and the like, in which case the bolt 5 need not necessarily be hollow, since a crown is not an essential part of a locket.
I claim as my invention 1.
2. The combination with a pendant of a cap piece resting on the top of the same and making a tight joint therewith at the periphery of the meeting faces of said parts, a headed bolt passing through the cap piece and screwed into the top of the pendant, said cap piece and pendant being jointly provided with cylindrical bearings located at opposite ends of a diametrical line and terminating in enlarecd recesses, a bow havi112 its end portions journaled in and completely inclosed circumferentially by said bearings and provided with heads located in said recesses, and a rotatable crown overlying the top of the bolt and recessed to receive the head of the same, whereby the under side of the crown is caused to bear upon the top of the cap piece.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 18th day of September, 1911.
