To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMns B. BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Tie- Plates and Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to tie plates, and more particularly to the class of combination tie plates and rail clamps.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this nature in which excessive strain will be relieved from the spikes ordinarily used for fastening the rails upon the cross ties, and also that will hold and brace the rails, so as to obviate lateral rocking thereof, as well as preventing the splitting or spreading of the said rails.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a rail will be permitted to expand and contract, but will be prevented from sinking within a cross tie.

A further object-of the invention is the provision of a device of this nature which is simple in construction, reliable and efiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a rail mounted in the tie plate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tie plate, with the rail removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the tie plate.

. designates a portion of a rail which is of the ordinary well-known construction, the same adapted to be mounted in a combined tie plate and rail clamp, presently described.

The combination tie plate and rail clamp comprises a base formed of seperable interlocking sections 6 and 7, respectively, the

section 6 being of considerably greater length than the section 7, and has formed in its under face a recess 8 for receiving the said section 7 which is of corresponding shape thereto. The recess 8 is spaced from one end of the section 6, so as to form depending holding lugs 9 which prevent the section 7 from displacement with respect to the section 6, when it is engaged in the latter.

Rising from the sections 6 and 7 are rail engaging wings or jaws 10, the section 6 at one end being cut away to form a slot 11 for receiving the jaw rising from the section 7. Thus it will be seen that the jaws 10 will clamp the base flange and web portion of the rail 5, yet permitting the said rail to expand and contract, as usual, without the possibility of loosening the tie plate which is adapted to be superimposed upon an or dinary cross tie.

It will be apparent that when the rail is positioned in the device, the rail will be prevented from sinking in the tie, and also be held against lateral turning movement, or the possibility of the spreading or splitting thereof. Provided in the base of the device are spike receiving openings 12, through which are adapted to be passed the ordinary spikes for engagement in a cross tie, whereby the device will be fastened thereto.

What is claimed is:

A device of the class described comprising a rail base having a slot opening through one end thereof and also provided with a recess in its under face extending at right angles to the slot and intersecting the same to form downturned outer abutment flanges at opposite sides of the slot, a pair of rail clamping jaws, one of said jaws being integral with the base, a supplemental base integral with the other jaw and engageable in the recess in the first named base on the inserting of its jaw in the slot therein whereby the said supplemental base will be held in the recess by the said abutment flanges to prevent lateral displacement of the bases with respect to each other.
