Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. CRnAsEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alfred, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Spool-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a receptacle for a spool of sewing thread, which receptacle is conveniently attachable to the garment of a person; to provi de a receptacle of the character mentioned, compact in form and economical in construction; to provide in a receptacle of the character mentioned a delivery guide for the thread drawn from the spool and receptacle; to provide a receptacle of the character mentioned, adapted, when out of service, for convenient storage within a work basket or other receptacle.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a receptacle constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, showing in conjunction therewith a spool of thread as contained therein; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 22 in Fig' 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing in perspective the receptacle when constructed in accordance with the present invention and in its out-ofservice condition.

The flanges 8 are thus formed on a central or body portion 9. Projected from the body portion 9 is an extension 10. The extension 10 is folded at the upper end to form the loop 11. The loop is secured by overturning the end of the extension 10 upon itself and fastening the end and body of the extension by a riveted eyelet 12. Within the loop 11 is secured the back bar of a safety pin 18. There may be substituted for the safety pin 13 any convenient form of temporary attaching device. A second loop is formed to constitute a pocket for the spool A by turning upward the extension 14 which is projected from the lower edge of the body 9. The extension 14 is elongated to form a loop or pocket sufficiently commodious to hold any of the usual sizes of thread spools. The loop'thus formed is maintained by glove or other suitable temporary fasteners, that shown in the drawings being the ordinary snap or glove fastener, the male portion 15 being preferably permanently located on the extension 10 while the female or socket portion 16 is permanently mounted upon the extension 14. To complete the loop at any time the portion 16 is registered with and pressed over the portion 15. Within the loop thus formed by the extension 14, a spool A rests. The spool A is mounted against dislodgment laterally by the flanges 8-8. The thread B, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, is inserted through the opening of the eyelet 17 as seen in the extension 14. The eyelet 17 serves as a guide for the delivery of the thread B from the spool A.

With a device thus constructed the operation is as follows: The spool A is placed upon the extension 14. The extension 14 is then bent over the spool, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, until the portion 16 registers with the portion 15 of the fasteners. As in the usual manner of securing these fasteners, by pressing the two sections 15 and 16 together, the former is forced within the socket of the latter to expand slightly within the said socket to prevent the separation of the said portions. The end of the thread B is extended through the eyelet 17 either prior or subsequent to the closure of the loop formed by the extension 14. The holder is now secured to the garment of the user of the thread in any convenient location, the securement being effected by passing the stem of the pin 13 through the garment and thereafter locking the same in the manner common to safety pins of the usual construction.

While I have herein described the semirigid material, such as celluloid, as the preferred material from which the holder is constructed, I do not wish to be confined to the employment of such material, as it is evident any flexible material, such as leather, cloth, or the like, may be employed in this connection.

Patented Jan. 14,1913- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

1. Aspool holder, comprisinga rigid body portion having outturned side flanges perpendicular to said body portion; extensions of said body portion, one of said extensions being flexible; a separable two-piece fastening device, one piece being fixedly mounted on one extension and the other piece on the other extension to form a loop in conjunction with said body portion, the said flanges partly closing the ends of said loop;

and means permanently connected with said body portion adapted for attachment to the garment of a person.

2. A spool holder, comprising a rigid body portion having outturned side flanges perpendicular to said body portion; extensions of said body portion, one of said extensions being flexible; a separable two-piece fastening device, one piece being fixedly mounted on one extension and the other piece on the-other extension to form a loop in conjunction with said body portion, the said flanges partly closing the ends of said loop; and a safety-pin permanently attached to said body portion for securing the holder to the garment of a person.

3. A spool holder, comprising an elongated strap-like member having a widened body portion provided with perpendicularlydisposed side flanges; a safety-pin permanently secured to one end of said member and adapted for attachment to the garment of a person; a glove-fastener, the male portion whereof is mounted on said member intermediate said pin and body portion, and the female portion whereof is mounted on said member at the opposite extreme end, said fasteners being so arranged that when the parts are connected, the member forms a loop adjacent the body portion; and an eyelet mounted on said member to aline with said body portion when said loop is formed.

4. A spool holder having a pocket the ends whereof are partly closed by outwardlyextended side flanges, and the front whereof is removable for access to the pocket; an eyelet mounted in the front of said pocket for guiding the thread delivered from a spool or source in said pocket; and means permanently mounted on said pocket structure for temporarily attaching same to the garment of the wearer.
