Description

nood sont @met dtttitef JOHN C. HALL AND ALLAN C. RICHARDS, or CINCINNATI, CHIC.'
Letters Patent No. 105,069, dated July 5,1870.
IMPROVED FOLDING-BEDSTEAD.
-Th Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
We, .ions C. HALL and ALLAN C. RICHARDS, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county0hio, have invented a new and useful Folding-Bedstead, of which General Description with .Reference to the .Drau-ling.
Figure l is a perspective view ot my bedstcad in its erect or folded condition and with one of its doors open.
Figures 2 and 3 are, respectively, aperspectire view and a longitudinal section of the bedstead in its opened and extended' condition.
A represents'a base similar to that cfa hook-case or wardrobe.
Journaled inthe sides of the base are pivots or i gudgeons, B, which project from the frame C, furnished with suitable yielding slats, or other foundation, for a bed or mattress.
Piroted to the foot-board C are two legs, D, which, in the erect condition ot' the bedstead, are folded behind and concealed by the hinged and falling cornice E.
l*` is a sliding extension, having arms, f, adapted to slide in grooves, c, in the main frame, which extension, being drawn cua-increases the length of the bedstead by that much, and enables its use by adult-s without necessitating an inconvenient height in the erect condition.
Hinged to one end of the frame Gis the head-board G, which, in the horizontal condition of the frame C, is capable of standing erect, as in lig. 2, being supportcdbehind by a bar, H, that extends horizontally iom standard I to standard 1', which rise from the said base A at each end thereof.
Projecting rearwardly from the head-board Gare two eyes or staples,J J', for a rod, K, surmounted by a Ahorizontal portion, K', whose hooked extremity, k, ati'ords a place of suspension or attachment for a mosquito-bar'or teister.A
The said horigontal portion, K, when in use, resting in a notch,l g, in the summitA of the 'headboard,l(see strong line in iig. 2,) and, when not in use, being capable of being lifted out of said notch and placed pali'- allel with the head-board, as shown by dotted lines in tig. 2, thus enabling the latter to be folded down upon the bed preparatory to giving theframe O its erect position.
The gudgeons B, being located near the front of the frame C, enable the latter to retain the erect position without special. fastening, but the elevation of it may be assisted by a thong of Iudia rubbeigL, or by a counterbalauce. v
There may be provided, in the base A, one or more receptacles, M, in which 'a mosquito-bar or other article may be deposited out of the dust when not wanted.
The frame O may have a middle bar or rail N, extending i'rorn head to foot, and there may be hinged to this bar, and to the side rail of' the frame, a board or desk, O, wliich,"when the door P opposite to it is opened, can be let down to the position shown in tig. 1.
It will be seen that the entire rear of the piece o i' furniture being open, there is a perfect ventilation of the bedding throughent the day, without exposing the same to view, and the construction is such that, when the frame O is horizontal, the article has the appeal'- ance of a regular upright bedstead.
Claims.
We claim as new and of our invention- The combination of the frame A I I H with the bed-frame G and gudgeons B, when the said parts are constructed and arranged as herein shown and dedescribed, for the purposes speciied.
2. In a folding-bcdstead, substantially as shown and described, the sliding extension F, as and for the purpose set fort-h.
3. The combination of the hinged and falling cornice E, and hinged legs D, when said parts are constructed and arranged as specified, so that the legs will be concealed by the falling of the cornice, in the erect position of the bed-frame. 4. The combination, with the frame O, and support. ing bar H, of the hinged and folding head-board G, substantially asl shown and'descrihed.
In testimony of which invention we hereunto set onrhands.
J. O. HALL. A. C. RICHARDS.
