normal w. KELLEY, or wnnnmeron, rnxas.
5 and State of Texas, have invented new and useful'lmprovements in Valves for To1let-- Basins, of which the following is a specification. 7 I This invention relates to valves for toilet basins or the like and has for an object to provide controlling means .for the valve which may be actuated manually exteriorly of the bowl so as to obviate the necessity on part of the operator of his placing his hand in the water when it is desired to discharge the contents of the bowl.
Another object of the invention is to rovide valve controlling means which w' 1 be positive in action, one which will operate to invite a gravitational seating of the valve so as to eliminate the use of springs or the like, and one which will include companion elements that may be readily connected with or disconnected from each other as the occasion may demand.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a section through a toilet basin showing the application of the valve controlling means thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the valve rod. Fig. 3 is a'perspective view of a portion of the rocking lever.
The bowl 1 conventionally shown herein may be of any well known construction, being preferably provided at its bottom with an interiorly threaded discharge opening 2 in which is secured the upper extremity of a waste pipe 3, while the lower end of the pipe is connected through a substantially T-coupling 4. with a lower branchb of the waste pipe. A tube or pipe section 6 has detachable connection at 7 with the ledge 8 of the bowl. The lower end of the tube 6 is disposed above the plane of the coupling 4 and is connected thereto by a downwardly extending tube 9. A valve rod 10 is movable vertically in the waste pipe 3, being provided at its upper end with a plug valve 11 which is adapted to be extended into the upper end of the waste pipe whereby to eflect a proper seal of the basin 1 to prevent the discharge of the water therefrom. The
lower end of the valve rod is bifurcated at 12, providing spaced portions 13 which have vALv'n non TOILET-BASINS. I

of the tube 6 and which is pivot-all Patented Jan. 14, 1913.
tially bayonet slots 14. An angularly disposed rocking lever 15 is pivotally mounted 1n the tube 9, and as shown said lever is provided with a long branch 16 which extends m the direction of the coupling 4 and which is terminally curved upwardly as at 17 and fitted between the portions 13 of the valve rod whereby the lateral retaining studs 18 will be disposed in the vertical legs 19 of the slots 14. At the opposite end the lever 15 is provided with a short arm 20 which extends into the elbow 21 at the lower end connected with the lower end of a vertica actuating rod 22. The rod 22 is slidable in suit able guides 23 in said tube 6 and as illustrated the upper end of the rod extends above the plane of the ledge 8 where it is connected with a manipulating lever 24. The lever 24 is pivotally connected with the upper end of a post 25 which extends through the ledge 8 and which is supported from a suitable bracket 26. The bracket 26 is provided with the embracing portions 27 receiving the ipe 3 and the tube 6 as shown in Fig. 1 of t e drawing.
Now that the details of construction of the device are disclosed it is seen that the major portion of the rocking lever 15 is disposed below the plane of the pivot of the lever, so as to contribute its weight to the weight of the valve rod 10 to insure a gravitational closing of the valve 11. Adjustment of the lever 24 in one direction imparts rocking movement to the lever 15 whereby the valve-11 will be adjusted to an opened position to permit the water to be discharged from the bowl. The connection between the valve rod 10 and the portion 17 of the rocking lever is such that the rod 10 can be adjusted to a position to cause the valve 11 thereof to be disposed at a considerable distance above the plane of the bottom of the basin 1 where it may be grasped by the hand and manipulated so as to cause a disconnection of the studs 18 from the portions 13 of the valve rod as is evident. In this manner it is seen that the valve rod can be entirely withdrawn from the waste pipe to facilitate repairing or grinding of the plug 11.
I claim A bowl having a waste pipe extending an angle from and communicating with formed therein oppositely disposed substansaid'waste pigs, a second tube exten throu h the e ge of the bowl and connecte with t e upper end of the first tube, a valve rod slidable vertically in the waste pipe, a
6 valve carried by said rod and adapted. to''- rod, said rocking lever havmgua short arm terminally disposed in ax ial a ement with g the second tube, an actuating rod operatively connected with the short arm, and a controlling lever connected with the actuating rod, the point of attachment of the long) arm of the rocking lever with the valve rod eing disgeged below the plane of the pivot of the roc g lever whereby the valve is gravitationally held in a closed 1position.
In testimon whereof aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
