To all w/zom it may concern Be it known that I, F RED lVroxorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thermopolis, in the county of Fremont and State of \Vyoniing, have invented a new and useful Type-Writer Desk, of whicht-he following is a specification.

This invention relates to typewriter desks, its object being to provide novel means whereby a typewriter may be easily housed, when notin use, and can be readily brought into operative position.

A further object is to provide a desk of this character having a movable top section which. while the typewriter is in use, is located below the typewriter but which, when the typewriter is in housed position, can be elevated so as to form a portion ofthe top of an otiice desk.

Another object is to provide a structure of this character the movable parts of which are so arranged and mounted as to work easily, a weight being utilized for shifting the parts in the directions desired.

Another object is to provide a device of this character the working parts of which are practically concealed and do not encroach upon the knee space beneath the desk.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the desk and showing the positions of the parts when the typewriter is in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the relative positions of the parts when the typewriter is housed and the structure is to be used as an oifice desk. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the desk with the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 1, the side housings of the slides being removed. Fig. fl. is a bottom plan view of the top panel and its locking means. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through a portion of the structure. reference 1 designates parallel upstanding walls provided, adjacent their rear ends, with upstanding projecting port-ions 2 the upper edges of which are connected by a top board 8. A back board 4 connects the rear edges of the walls 1 and their extensions 2 and a slot 5 is formed longitudinally within each wall 1 at a point below the top thereof, said slot extending close to the front and back edges of the wall. Mounted on each wall and close to the bottom of the slot therein is a cleat 6 having a wear strip 7 upon its upper face.

Guide strips 8 are arranged upon the in ner face of each wall and slidably mounted between them is a frame 9 or the like having a head 10 at its upper end. These strips or guides 8 may be connected by a board or finishing strip 11 whereby the sliding frame 9 is concealed. Secured to and supported by the head 10 is a top section 12 provided,

near its ends, with bottom cleats 13 which bear upon and are fastened to the heads 10. The side edges of this top section 12 are beveled, as shown particularly at let in Fig. 5 and secured to the bottom of the section 12 adjacent its sides is a pair of spring pressed bolts 15. The bolts of each pair are connected, by flexible elements 16, to a central winding shaft 17 journaled upon the bottom of the section 12 and extending slightly beyond the front end thereof where it terminates in a knob or finger piece 18 whereby the shaft can be readily rotated. It is to be understood that the springs 19 serve to hold the bolts 15 normally projecting into recesses 20 formed in the inner Thus the section 12 is held against up and down movement. By rotating shaft 17, however, the flexible elements 16 can be wound thereon so as to retract the bolts 15 from the recesses 20 and thus unlock section 12 and permit it to be moved upwardly or downwardly as desired. Fulcrumed upon the inner face of each wall 1 and adjacent the back board t is a lever 21 having a cam face 22 extending above the pivot 28 of the lever. The two levers are connected by a cross bar 24 whereby they are caused to move in unison and this bar supports a weight or counter balance 25 iwhich is bolted or otherwise secured thereto. The lower end of each lever 21 has a cord or other suitable flexible device 26 secured at one end thereto and extending partly around a guide sheave 27 mounted upon the back board 1. From this sheave the flexible device 26 extends forwardly and upwardly into engagement with a sheave 28 which is supported between the wall 1 and the finishing strip or board 11. From this sheave 28 the cord extends downwardly and is secured to the lower end of the sliding frame 9.

A closure 29 is pivotally mounted between the side extensions and is adapted nor mally to close the space between the front edges of said. extensions and to project from the top board 8 downwardly to recesses 30 formed in the inner faces of the walls 1 at the upper edges thereof and at the front edges of the extensions 2. The closure 29 has a ledge 31 along its lower or outer edge and wings 32 are preferably extended from the sides of the closure and are pivotally connected, as at 33, to the extensions 2. A cord or other flexible element 3-1 is attached to each wing 32 at a point above the pivot 33 and extends back into engagement with a guide sheave 35 mounted on the back board 1. From this sheave the cord extends downwardly into engagement with another guide sheave 36 mounted on the back board 4t thence upwardly and is attached to the upper portion of the adjacent cam face 22. The parts are so proportioned that when the top section. 12 and its slides 9 are in lowermost position with the bolts 15 seated in the notches or recesses 20, the connections 3% are drawn taut and support the closure 29 in elevated position, as shown in Fig. 1.

A typewriter supporting leaf 3? is slidably mounted, at its ends, in the slots 5 and is provided on its lower face, with longitudinal shoulders 38 adapted to lap the inner faces of the walls 1, thus to hold the leaf against lateral displacement. The extremities of the leaf extend over the cleats (5 and anti-friction balls 89 are interposed between the cleats and the extremities of the leaf so as to enable the leaf to be moved backwardly and forwardly readily so as to assume a position either under the top board 3 or over the lowered top section 12.

Fixed top sections 1:0 are secured upon the upper edges of the walls 1 and extend into the vertical paths of the beve ed edges of the movable top section 12, as shown particularly in Fig. 5, these overhanging portions of the fixed sections 40 being beveled, as shown at l-l so as to be snugly engaged by the beveled edges 1% when the section 12 is raised to its highest point, as hereinafter described. Notches or recesses 12 are formed in the inner faces of the walls 1 below the fixed sections 10 and are adapted to receive the bolts 15.

An apron 13 extends downwardly from the back edge of the section 12.

As hereinbefore stated the leaf 37 is adapted to support a typewriter. When it is desired to house the typewriter and use the structure as an ofiice desk, leaf 3?, with the typewriter thereon, is slid backwardly until it comes against the back board 4. The typewriter is thus brought into position under the top board 3 and back of the front inclined edges of the extension 2. One hand of the operator is then placed flat upon the section 12 while the other hand is used for rotating the shaft 17 and winding the connections 1.6 thereon. Bolts 15 are thus withdrawn from the recesses 20 and the weight is thus released and operates to six" ig the lower ends of the levers 21 forwardly and upwardly. These levers will thus pull on the connections 26 and cause the slides t) to move upwardly, thereby elevating the section 12 until its beveled edges 1 1 come against the beveled edges 41 of the fixed sections 4:0. The spring bolts 15 can then be caused to spring into notches or recesses 12 and the section 12 will thus be supported with its upper face flush with the upper faces of the sections 40. During this move ment of lever 21, the cam face 22 of each lever is moving downwardly and the connection 34: thus becomes slack. The outer end of the closure 29 will therefore move downwardly by gravity until its ledge 81 becomes seated at its ends within the recesses 30 and with its upper face flush with the top of the section 12. The closure thus assumes a position with its front face flush with the front edges of the extensions 2 and the typewriter is therefore completely housed. When the section 12 moves upwardly to the position described, the apron closes the space between the ledge 30 and the leaf 37 so as to prevent dust from entering the space in which the typewriter is housed.

lVhen it is desired to use the typewriter, the shaft 17 is rotated so as to wind the connections l6 and withdraw the bolts 15 from the recesses or notches 12. The top section 12 is then pushed downwardly until the bolts 15 are brought into position to become seated in the notches or recesses 20. This downward movement of the section 12 will cause slides 9 to pull on the connections 26 and thus swing the lower ends of the levers 21 backwardly. The cam faces will therefore pull on the connections 34 and cause the closure 29 to swing to the position shown in Fig. 1. Leaf 87 can then be drawn forward with the typewriter thereon and the typewriter will assume a position between the sections 10.

It will be seen that the mechanism con stituting the present invention is very simple and compact and does not encroach to an objectionable extent upon the knee space under the desk. The sections 4 0 can of course be of any size desired and can be extended suitable distances beyond the outer sides of the walls 1, and drawers, cupboards or the like may be constructed beyond the walls 1 and under the sections 40. Furthermore the present improvements can be easily applied to desks already in use simply by cut-ting away the middle portion of the top of the desk so as to form the movable desk section 12 and then erecting on the desk parts corresponding with the extensions 2. The other parts of the mechanism can be easily applied as will be obvious.

If desired, the slots 5 may register with recesses formed in the front of the desk, as shown at 43. Thus it becomes possible to entirely remove the leaf 37 and, if desired, to draw it out a desired distance beyond the front face of the desk.

IVhat is claimed is 1. In a desk the combination with opposed fixed top sections, a vertically movable top section, and means for holding said movable section in engagement wit-h or spaced from the fixed sections, of a horizontally movable leaf, a housing therefor, a closure for the housing, and means operated by the downward movement of the movable top section for shifting the closure to closed position.

2. In a desk the combination with opposed fixed top sections, of a vertically movable top section, means for holding said section flush with or in position below the fixed sections, a horizontally movable leaf mounted to slide in a plane extending between the two limit-s of movement of the movable section, a housing extending over the path of the leaf, a closure therefor, means for automatically elevating the movable top section when the leaf is in position under the housing, said closure being movable to shut position by gravity.

3. In a desk the combination with spaced fixed top sections, of a movable top section, means for holding the same flush with or spaced below the fixed top sections, a hous ing, a closure therefor, a horizontally movable supporting leaf having its path of movement extending under the housing and between the limits of movement of the movable section, and means operated by the downward movement of the movable section for shifting the closure to open position.

In a desk the combination with spaced fixed top sections, of a movable top section, means for holding the same flush with or spaced below the fixed top sections, a hous ing, a closure therefor, a horizontally movable supporting leaf having its path of movement extending under the housing and between the limits of movement of the movable section, means upon the movable closure for closing the space between the back end thereof and the front edge of the leaf when said leaf is disposed below the housing, and means operated by the depression of the movable section to the lower limit of its movement, for opening the closure to permit movement of the leaf into position above the movable section.

A typewriter desk including opposed fixed top sections, a vertically movable top section, means for holding said movable section flush with or in position below the fixed sections, said fixed sections constituting stops for limiting the upward movement of the movable section, a housing, a pivoted closure therefor, a horizontally slidable leaf having its plane of movement extending between the limits of vertical movement of the movable section and below the housing, a weighted lever, slides depending from and movable with the movable top section, a flexible connection between the slides and the lever, guides for the connection, a flexible connection between the lever and the closure, guides therefor, and a counter balance carried by the lever for automatically elevating the movable section when released.

6. A typewriter desk including a vertically movable top section, means for holding the same in raised or lowered position, a housing, a closure therefor, a horizontally slidable leaf having its plane of movement extending between the limits of movement of the top section and extending under the housing, means for automatically elevating the movable section when released and when the leaf is under the housing, and a flexible connection between said means and the closure, said closure being movable by gravity to closed position during the eleva tion of the movable section.

7. A typewriter desk including a vertically movable top section, means for holdin the same in raised or lowered position, a housing, a closure therefor, a horizontally slidable leaf having its plane of movement extending between the limits of movement of the top section and extending under the housing, means for automatically elevating the movable section when released and when the leaf is under the housing, and a flexible connection between said means and the closure, said closure being movable by gravity to closed position during the elevation of the movable section, the flexible connection between the closure and elevating means operating to open the closure when the movable section is depressed.

In a typewriter desk the combination with a vertically movable top section, and means for holding said section in raised or lowered position, of opposed slides movable with the section, guides therefor, connected levers, flexible connections between the levers and the slides, guides for the connections, a weight carried by the levers for automatically elevating the guides and section when said section is released, and a typewriter supporting leaf slidable horizontally in a plane extending between the limits of movement of the top section.
