ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR PAPER-CARRIAGES OF CALCULATING-MACHINES.

This invention relates to an adjusting device for the paper carriages of calculating machines of the type provided with printing mechanism. In such machines it is of great importance to move the paper carriage rapidly backward and forward bet-ween a number of columns, and adnst it in any required position. For this purpose the carriage is connected by levers to a stud which is guided in a slot provided in the front wall, and on releasing the hand therefrom. it auto-matically adjusts itself at the required position, when seized itis again released.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a part of the front wall of the machine, with the tabulator in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan of a form of adjusting -means, the front Wall being partly broken away. Figs; 3' and 1 show a gripper guide in the slot of the front Wall, in two different positions. 4 Figs. '5 and 6 are sections at right an les to Figs. 3 and 4.--showing the stud.
The base plate '1, of the writing device, is rigidly connected to the front wall of the machine by rods 2 and 3. In the hold Wall 4}, provided a guiding siot 5, for the stud 10, and alcove the slot are provided holes 6, for the tabulator pins 7. If this adjustment is to be changed, the stud 10 is again seized in the manner hercinbe fore described,.a1ul by pressing. on the pin 12, the conical part 1 :3 is'moved out of the slot 14, whereupon the gripper 18, provided on the slide 15, -an be moved over the tabulator pin. 7 by rotating about "the pin 16 (Fig. 4), so that the carriage again becomes freely movable. If it is desired that the gripper 18, as soon as a large number of tabulator pins 7 have been inserted, should pass over a number of separate tabulator pins, so that the corresponding heading may remain free, then the stud 10, by pressing on the pin 12, is simultaneously moved such a distance that the tabulator pins 7 remain behind the gripper 18 and the gripper arms can slide over these. Shortly before reaching the required stopping position. the gripper 1Q is allowed to slide back and one of the gripper arms 18 catches on the corresponding tabulator pin 7, so that the paper carriage again remains stationary.
The connection of the stud 10, or the spring operated pin 12, to the paper carriage, is eifected in the following manner To the conical part 13 of the pin 12 there is secured. by means of an eye 12, a link 21 which is hinged to the lever 22. The lever 1 92 is pivoted to a pin 23, provided on the underside of the base plate 1. At 2 1, there secured to the rod 22 a lever 25, of which the other end 26, is pivoted to a rod 27.
The rod 27 is pivoted at 28, in the support 1 29, on the front wall 4, and its other end is connected at 30 to a rod 31, which is connected to the member 33, rigidly secured to (not shown), bythe the paper carriage, ivot 32. A device of the class described comprising in combination, a carriage, a frame portion, a pin adjustably mounted on said frame portion to be moved longitudinally thereof, brakings on said pin, a spring for normally holding said'braking means in an acting position to lock said pin in an adjusted position, and mechanism connecting said pin with said carriage, substantially as described.
4. A paper carriage adjusting device comprising n combination a frame with a slideway therein, a block slidable in said way, a pin slidable in.said block and having braking means to lock the block in an adjusted position, a sleeve on said pin, a spring for holding said pin and sleeve in normal positions, a spring controlled gripper on said sleeve, and tabulator pins adjustable on said frame and disposed in the path of said gripper. v
