PIPE-MILL.
Patented Jan. 7, 1913.
To azisaar aug-mm l Beitrknown thatI- :LJoHNJ-. CONNOR, a d Stat-es, residmg .at
andjSt'ate-o Ohio, have invented new and usefuli .Im rovements in'LPipe-Mills, of whichfthe ollowing isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for drawing, sizing` and cooling butt-Weld pipes, and vits object is to arrange the drawing, sizing, and cooling devices vso as to dispense with considerable-labor, save valuable spacein crowded plants', `minimize liability-to accidents and cheapen the cost of P1oduction.il'' I' l The :accompanying Adrawing shows diagrammatically a plan (partly in-section) of a Vbatti-weldfl'iipe mill with -the elements' arranged according to'my invention, it being "'showthe'idetails of the val'iousparts understood-'.-that I have not undertakenbto ecause they zare all well-known, but that I j have merely indicated conventionally the presence of certa-in elements at certain places.
On-thefdrawing referred to, 1 designates the 'skelplhe' ,ing .Qpfu'rnace, inwhich the skelp'ilie 's l hefatdinthe usual manner.
3 .is a pivo dr -bench' arranged to osc-illate ontheg'ipivotAf-'so that its front end may be placed'op'posite 'thezend'of any one of the several skelp 2 inthe furnace 1 ina well known manner.'
A5 is'a` 'pair of tongs'or other pipe draw. ingl device adapted to be connected to the mese or front end of the skelp and to the drwhan 6 shown in dotted lines, whereby the Skelp may be drawn through 'the welding die 7` Seated on the front end of the draw-bench 3.
8 designates the sizing rolls (only the top one being shown), which are situated directly back of the draw-bench 3 and approximately in line therewith so that, after the tongs have been disconnected from the draw-chain 6, the latter wi-ll carrythe pipe with the tongs attached rearwardly into t e pass of the sizing rolls 8. From the rolls 8 the pipe and tongs pass into the trough 9 at the rear of the said rolls and in line therewith.
The pipes pass automatically or by aid of an attendant from the trough upon the cooling rack of well-known construction. I
vin the county of 'Mahoning in mind that type of cooling rack which has the sprccketchains 10`running'thereon The d awing apr well-known appara is` ,A called hook-runner 'to connectthe tongs to While the-pipesare coolf 14 5.0

the chain by means -ofiiho'oksx,,which are rep*- moved by the hookErunnersfli-*fter the skelp has left the welding-'die drawing apparatus of a different;construction may be employed.
l Heretofore, the. ipe' with` the tongs attached has been, a ter the tongs havebeen disconnected from thel chain,l guided laterally from the draw-bench onto a number of inclined skids, over which the pipes were guided into a sizing-trough at the outer end of the skids. Before the pipe was put into the trough, an attendant, called the takeroff, who was stationed between the bench and the trough and at the rear of the skids removed the tongs from the pipe.
After' the pipe had reached the sizing "i ,rolls being called vthe cross-rolls. After the 'pipe emerged from the cross-rolls, it was transferred to the cooling-rack.
'With m improved arrangement of apparat-us, dispense with the devices required to guide the tongs and Econnected pipe to the taker-oit1 and the skids; I disense with the taker-oit, the skids, the sizlng trough, attendants therefor, and the cross-rolls. .I save a large amount of valuable space which can he utilized for other purposes, and I save the wear whichthe pipe produces on the sizing trough and which the cross-rolls cause to the trough between the sizing' and cross-rolls.. I arrange the -furnace, the draw-bench, the swing-rolls,
