Be it known that I, RALPH E. .CHANTRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Big Arm, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Horse -Releasing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to horse releasing devices, and it has for its object to provide one with clips to which the tug straps may be secured, the clips being disposed in recesses in the back of the swingletrees, having forwardly extending shoulders disposed in bearing openings in the swingletrees, and lateral arms disposed in the slots in the swingletrees, so that the locking slides which are provided for engaging the back of the clips will hold the clips in position on the rear of the swingletree until the locking slides are drawn back, when the clips will pivot on their shoulders, and the inner ends of the clips will be thrown free from the swingletrees.

Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing how my invention is applied to swingletrees; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the end of one of the swingletrees, showing the clips disposed in the recess; Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but with the locking slide drawn back to free the clip; Fig. 4 is a view showing one of the clips; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the swingletree with the clip removed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a beam 5 is provided which may be pivoted to the wagon, or the wagon pole, in any approved manner, two swingletrees or draft members 6 being provided, each swingletree or draft member being connected with an end of the beam 5, by a clevis 7 The end of each swingletree is provided with a recess 8, a bearing opening 9, at its outer end, and an opening 10 at its inner end, these openings 9 and 10 being in communication with the recesses 8. Clips 11 are provided, which are normally disposed in the recesses 8, the clips 11 having projections 12, which are normally disposed in the open- Specification of Letters Patent.

slots 15, in the end of each swingletree, the

said slots 15 being in communication with the recesses 8. The outer ends 16 of the clips 11 project beyond the ends of each swingletree and to these outer ends 16 of the clips 11 are secured the tug straps 17. Springs 18 are disposed in the recesses 8, the springs being secured to the swingletree in the openings 19, which are in communication with the recesses 8, the springs being pressed back into the said openings 19, when the clips 11 are in the position shown in Fig. 2. The clips 11 are locked in position by the locking slides 20, these locking slides 20 being disposed for traveling in the guideways 21, in the bands 22, one of these bands 22 being disposed around each end of each swingletree, and being held in position by the pins 23. There are openings 24: in the rear of each band 22, in which pins 25 are adapted to travel, these pins 25 projecting through and being secured in openings 26 in the locking slides 20. The pins 25 are provided to be engaged by the springs 27, so that the springs 27 will hold the pins 25, with the locking slides, yieldingly extended, and in engagement with the backs of the clips 11. To the eyes 29 in the locking slides 20, there are secured ropes 28, these ropes 28 passing around pulleys 30 in the rear of each swingletree, and then back to the pulley 31 disposed on the beam 5. The ropes 28 then pass around one of the pulleys S2, and rearwardly, to a position where they may be drawn on by the driver of the vehicle.

It will be understood that my invention may be used with one or any number of swingletrees, and that these swingletrees may be mounted on the vehicle or on the cross beam 5 in any approved manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A. swingle tree having a bearing opening at its end, extending through its rear edge and the said end, a clip normally disposed longitudinally of and against the rear edge of the swingle tree, means for holding the clip in place, the clip having a forwardly extending shoulder disposed in the bearing opening, and means beyond the shoulder to which a tug strap may be secured, so that when the means are operated to free the clip from the swingletree, the pull of the tug strap at the outer end of the clip will, with the shoulder in the bearing, throw the clip clear of the swingletree.

2. A swingletree having a recess terminating in a bearing at the end of the swingletree, a detachable clip to which a tug strap may be secured, disposed in the recess and having a shoulder disposed in the bearing, a locking member for engaging the clip for holding the clip in the recess, and a spring disposed in the recess for throwing the clip out of the recess and free from the swingletree when the clip is freed from the locking member.

A swingletree having in its rear face a longitudinal recess leading out through the end of the swingletree and having a forwardly extending portion at its outer end forming a bearing, the recess having a depression in its bottom at the inner end and the walls of the outer end of said recess having vertical slots, a clip to which a lug is secured, having at its outer end a shoulder and lugs fitting loosely in the bearing and slots respectively of the recess and at its inner end a projection fitting in the depression of the recess, and a sliding member on the swingletree and adapted to project over the inner end of the clip to hold it in the said recess.

A. swingletree having a recess in its rear edge, a forwardly extending bearing member at the end of the swingletree and in communication with the recess, and a forwardly-extending opening at the inner end of the recess and in communication therewith, there being vertical slots in the swingletree in communication with the recess, a detachable clip to which a tug strap may be secured, disposed longitudinally of the swingletree and in the recess, and having a shoulder disposed in the bearing opening, a projection disposed in the second-mentioned opening, arms on the clip disposed in the slots, a spring in the said recess and engaging the clip, and a locking member for holding the clip in the recess.
