FREDRICK WESSEL, 0F HOUSTON, TEXAS.
RAIL-FASTENER.
Application led March 16, 1911, Serial No. 614,857.
To all inkom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnnnnioii VnssnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in t-he county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rail tastenings and is more especially adapted to ties constructed of concrete.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient bolt receiving socket which can be conveniently driven or screwed into the socket the head of the bolt being bindingly brought in contact with the flange oit the rail whereby the latter is rigidly held upon the tie.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a. vertical longitudinal section of a tie and the socket which is employed in carrying out the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the socket; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the socket.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invention 1, represents a tie preferably com posed of concrete or similar plastic material, although it is obvious that the invention may be equally applicable to ties of various constructions.
As shown in Fig. l, the usual rails are employed without modification and preferably seated upon plates 14 formed of wood, fiber or other suitable material which compensates for the vibration of the rails, these plates being preferably employed when concrete ties are used. The improved socket 20 shown is formed from five pieces 2l of heavy steel wire which are bent to form spiral coils 22 the ends of which are left projecting to form anchors 23 which will securely fasten the socket in place when embedded in the concrete forming the tie. The coiled pieces of wire are assembled and interlocked together Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 7,1913.
Renewed May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,305.
as herein shown thus forming the threaded socket 2O which, when secured in the tie will iorm a rm receptacle for the screw spikes 13 which are engaged therewith for :ta-stening the rails to the tie. In forming the socket the coils of the wires at the upper and lower ends thereof are set slightly out of alinement with the main portion of the socket so that when the spikes are engaged with the latter, said offset portions of the coils will bind against the threaded sides of the screw spikes and will thus lock the latter or prevent the same from working loose.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A concrete railway tie having arranged therein rail fastening devices, said devices comprising sockets formed from a series of spirally coiled wire rods, said rods having their ends projecting beyond the socket to form anchoring devices whereby the sockets are held in place in the ties.
2. A concrete railway tie having arranged therein trussed rein-forcing rods and rail tastening devices, said devices comprising sockets formed from a plurality of wire rods bent to form coils, said coils being assembled and interlocked together to form a threaded socket and having their' ends projecting beyond the sides of the socket to torni anchoring devices, the coils at the upper and lower ends of the socket being offset to form spike locking devices and screw spikes having a threaded engagement with said socket whereby the rails are securely fastened to the ties.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDRICK WESSEL.
