AIR-LOCK FOR CAISSONS. I'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 21, 1912.
Patented J an. 7, 1913.
semi No. 685,309.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MA'r'rsoN, of the cit-y of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Locks for Caissons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to air locks for caissons.
Letters Patent No. 593,947 issued to me November 16, 1897 show an air lock having a swiveled sheave for the hoisting cable, that is, the sheave or pulley is mounted on a bracket which is swiveled on the stuffing box and rests upon the top of the lock so that it may be turned to adapt itself to any direction of travel of the hoisting cable. The advantages of this construction are well known in foundation work especially where numerous piers are required.
My present improvements are adapted to locks having the feature referred to but are not limited in that regard.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the roller. Fig. 1 is an enlarged section of the bushing with the cable omitted. Fig 5 is a transverse section thereof showing the cable. y
As illustrated, 1 is the upper end of the cylindrical shaft mounted on which is the air lock proper 2 of corresponding formation. On the top or cover 3 of the lock is mounted the stuflng box 4 through which the hoisting cable passes to the sheave 5. The sheave is preferably supported according to the disclosures of the patent above referred to, that is, it is ournaled in a bracket 6 which swivels on the stutng box, the lower end of the bracket resting on the cover of the lock. By this means the sheave may be turned in any desired direction of travel of the hoisting cable.
I provide the lock with a side opening 7 closed by a suitable door not shown. At the bottom of the opening I have shown the lock provided with a roller 9 on a shaft 10 mounted in angle-irons 12 secured to t-he flange on the lock casing. rIhe roller is of concaved formation, that is, it is narrowest at its center and of flaring formation toward its ends. This enables me to place the yroller close to the opening as shown in Fig.
2 and yet adapt the roller to the circular formation of the casing. In practice when a bucket containing excavated material is hoisted into the lock and the door 8 is opened the bucket is emptied by tilting it outward over the bottom of the opening 7. As the average weight of a bucket full of material is about five hundred pounds this operation tends to break away the lo-ck casing unless some means be provided for lessening wear. The roller above described has been found well adapted to the purpose.
As shown in detail in Figs. l and 5 I have provided the stuiiing box with a two-partadjustable bushing for the hoisting cable. This comprises two metallic packing pieces, in the form of pins, 15 16 preferably of copper and movable in transverse grooves 17 18 in the top of the stuffing box. At their inner extremities each of the packing pieces 15, 16 is concaved so as to substantially inclose the cable 19. A pair of threaded bolts 20, 21 are tapped in the grooves 17, 18 respectively. These may be turned to advance the packing pieces to more snugly engage the cable as occasion requires.
I claim as my invention 1. An air lock for caissons having an opening in its side, and a roller mounted at the bottom of said opening, for the purpose stated.
2. An air lock for caissons consisting of a cylindrical casing having an opening in its side, and a concaved roller mounted on said casing at the bottom of said opening, for the purpose stated.
3. An air lock for caissons having a stuifing box for the hoisting cable, and an adjustable metallic packing pin mounted in the box and adapted to contact with the cable.
4. An air lock for caissons having a stuifing box for the hoisting cable, said box having opposite transverse grooves, and a packing pin adjustably mounted in each of said grooves.
5. An air lock for caissons having a stuifing box for the hoisting cable, said box having opposite transverse grooves, a packing pin in each of said grooves, and a bolt tapped in each of said grooves and adapted zIn testimony whereof, I have signed this to Contact With its respective pin. specification in the presence of tWo sub- 6. The herein described stuffing box for soribing Witnesses. Cables having a. pair of oppositely disposed SAMUEL MATTSON. 5 metallic packing pins formed with conoaved Witnesses:
ends to Contact With the cable, and means` C. S. SMITH, for adjusting said pins. I). GRANQUIST.
