Description

- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK M. BECKET, OF 1\TIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ELECTRO METALLURGICAL COMPANY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
ELECTRIC-FURNACE LINING.
No Drawing.
Electric-Furnace Lining, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to a liningfor electric furnaces, especially those which are used in the production of ferrotungsten, ferrochromium and similar alloys.
Ores of tungsten chromium and other difiicultly-reducible metals may be smelted in furnaces lined With carbon, but the reduoed metal or alloy then becomes undesirably carburized by contact with such lining. Usual linings other than carbon areexpensive and short-lived, notwithstanding the high temperatures and corrosive slagls.
According to the present invention, t ese furnaces are lined with tungsten or a tungsten alloy, preferably a ferroaalloy high in tungsten, for example one containing 80 per cent. and upward. The lining may consist of cast plates of the alloy, or of refractory blocks faced with an adherent layer of the alloy.- The plates or blocks are preferably :of ferrotungsten.
surrounded. by the 'usual Water-cooled cas-- ng.
A composite block coated with ferrotungsten may be made by molding a mixture of a tungsten ore containing iron and carbon, and heating the surface of the block to the reduction-point of the metals, either by a flame or electrically, whereby the surficial .portion is converted into-an adherent facing An electric are or arcs may be applied. tothe facing, to render it v copiel of this pe tent inay be obtained for Specification of Letters latent.

dense, smooth and homogeneous. The facing of ferrotungsten may be reduced from or applied to the blocks either before or after they have been built into the electric furnace. I
A furnace lining consisting essentially of tungsten, for example a higl1-tungsten ferroalloy, has a high melting point and is chemically inert toward the slags produced in smelting ores of tungsten and chromium.
It does not contaminate the product With carbon and is much more durable than a lin ing of magnesia or silica. In operatin furnaces having such linings, it is desira le to maintain a reducing atmosphere in the furnace, to prevent oxidation of the exposed surfaces of the linin above the bath o1 I claim:
1. An electric furnace having a lining consisting of ferrotungsten.
having. a facing consisting essentially of tungsten. 1
3. A furnace lining, comprising a refractory body having an adherent facing of ferrot-ungsten. 4. A furnace lining, comprising a refrac tory body having an adherent facing essentially of tungsten reduced from said body.
5. A furnace lining, comprising a refractory body having an adherent faclng of fer rotungsten reduced from said body.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature i in presence of two witnesses.
