L Be it known that I, `Basin resident of the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, inj the State of New York,
have invented certain new and vuseful-Improvements in Logging-Cars", oflwhichi the following is a'specilicatiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
` The object .of the present improvementsv is to provide a means for connecting tofgather, the two trucks 'of logging cars which shall permitl of 'ready adjustment so' that the trucks and their acompanyin'g-log-supporting vbunks may be separated by varylng j amounts according to thelengths of the logs',
and lwhich shall also permit of ready replacement when injured byA contact with the logs as frequently happens.. 4Where lsteel sills were employed for this purpose heretofore,
they could not be straightened' or conveniently replaced when Bent by the logs,` and they neither offered norA embodied any satisfactory means for adjusting the car to different liengths of logs, In accordance with thefpresent invention, I provide a connecting 4 art steel; the
formof a box girder and carries the draftrigging, being alined with the timber part and extendin 'beyond the bunks. In this way the dra t-rigging ma be firmly' and permanently unitedy to the unk and trucks while `permitting different lengths of ltimber .to ,be inserted readily between the steel gir'drsand securely bolted to the same, and
also to be removed and -replaced when neciiying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan v1ew of a car embodying the improvements, being partly broken away for convenience in illustrating. Fig..72 a detail side view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of one of thev log supporting" bunks and some of its associated parts,.as seen from a plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, one of the stakes, however, being shown in vertical section. A 1
The trucks, denoted by a,are' each provided witha log-supporting bunk b and'some means, such as a glrder c, for receiving and `sup ortng the draft-rigging ci. T her trucks, bunli auf gird'er should be united securely and permanently together, forv which pur- I pose any suitabletneansmay be employed.A v A Macon, a.sub-:v ject :of the King of Great Britain, and" a- As shown, the girders c are box-shaped and extend beyond and'Yare fastened' to thereN l spective holsters of the trucks, and each'bun'k meer j is cut awayjso that 'itsweb e may rest upon the. top of thecorrespondingibox-girder (Fig. 3), ,in 'which position it is `securely vfastened by angles f. Thus, eachtruck` is firmly and permanently united Awith the corresponding box-'girder and log-supporting vbunk, whereby the draft-rigging operates directly upon the bunk or load.
Alined'V withithe boX-girders c, which are,.
of course, of steel, is a timber sill made preferably in three longitudinal members .one of whleh, as g, fits at eachend into the respec-l tive,box-'g1.rders, and the other two members L and flanking the central one g and Vover-l lapping the ends of the 'girders at the sides.'
hese timbers are bolted together and to the girders at each end by' bolts l1. which extend 4through the angle plates f already referred to. It will be seen that the foregoing-.
construction makes the timber sills readily removable when injured or\vhen sills of a different length are tobe` inserted, and all this Without affectingthe draft-rigging or the relation of the bunk toc/the latter or to the truck.
It will be obvious that the improvements may be embodied in underframes for various kinds of cars other than logging cars where the advantages ofa flexible. timber center sill are'desirable and cannot be a'orded by.
the usual steel construction. In such a case,
the bunks would become the bolsters of the frame and could= beconstructed and united to the center sill in such 'a way as to meet the demands of any particular case.
I claim as my mvention: 1. In an underframe for cars, a center s1ll having a steel box member at each end thereofwith outwardly facing side channels, three timber beams forming the reach member of the center sill, the endsl of the central beam lying within the box members, and the ends of the side beams lying in the outwardly facing channels, and. means tofasten the ends of the beams to the box members.
2. In anunderframe for cars, a center sill having asteel box member at each end thereof adapted to contain the draft rigging, the said box members having outwardly facing channels, three timber beams.; forming thc reach member of the center sill, the ends of thev central beam lying within the box memmember at each end thereof with outwardly facing side channels, the bunks being mount ed upon said box members, three` timber beams forming the reach member of the center sill, the ends ofthe central' beam 1 ing within the box members, and theends o the side beams lying in the outwardly facing channels, and bolts passing through all of Ythe beams and both channels in order Vto unite the beams to the boxmembers.
4. In a logging car, the combination with the bunks, of a center sill having a steel box outer ends of the box members, the bunks being mounted 4upon and near the inner ends of the box members, threeV timber', beams forming the reach member of the center sill, the ends of the'centralA beam lyin within the box members, the ends of the si e beams lyingin the loutwardly facing channels, and all of said beams extending beyond the bunks toward the ends of the car, and bolts assing through alln of the beams and both c annels in order t'o 'unite the beams' to the box members. a
