INVENTORS Sa/vafone Cuseflzax fication, we have pertains to make UNITED sTA EsrATENT FFI JOHN, F. shown AND SALVATORE cosnnza, 01;" new "1031:, n, Y
sArE'rY-vsLvE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN F. BROWN and SALVATORE CUSENZA, a citizen of the United States and a subject of the King of Italy, respectively, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Valves, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it apand use the same.
This invention relates to supply valves for use in connect-ion with gas burners, gasolene supply pipes and for various other purposes, and the object thereof is to provide a safety valve of this classwhich is simple in construction and operation, and which will effectually prevent the accidental opening of the valve and also prevent accidents which frequently occur by reason of the failure to properly close the valve.
"The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification. of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement erodesignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views. and in which;
Figure l is a sectional side view of a pipe or pipe cou 'iling attachment provided with our improved valve; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-'2 of- Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a plan view of a locking rack and collar which we employ and which is shown in section in Fig. l, and
Fig. 4 a side view showing a modification.
.ln the drawing forming part of this specishown at l a pipe or pipe coupling in which is mounted an ordinary plug valve 7). The pipe or pipe coupling (1 18 provided with a neck portion a which surrounds the upper end of the valve and with another neck portion a which incloses the lower end of the valve, and in the practice of our invention we mount on the neck portion a a lock collar 0 havin a segmental or arc-shaped rack 0 the lengt 1 of which is preferably greater than one-quarter ofthe circumference of the collar (1', and the collar 0 may be secured to the neck a in any desired manner as for instance, by soldering, or if preferred said rack may be formed integrally with the neck a and thepipe or pipe coupling a. The valve b is provided with a'yoke-shaped head I) in which is pivoted a lock lever (I one end of which pro-- to form a handle and jects as shown at (I I,

closing the valve,
nose d which operates in connection with the rack 0 The head of the valve Z) is also provided, in the form of constructionshown in Fig. l, with a projecting handle 0 which ranges parallel with and beneath the handle end of the lever d and between which and said lever is placed a spring f which normally. serves to hold the nose (Z of said lever in engagement with the rack 0' \Vith this construction, whenever it is desired to open .the valve, the handle 6 and the handle end of the lever "are grasped by the hand and the handle end of the lever depressed. This throws the nose (i out of engagement with the rack 0 1 and the valve may be turned in either direction by means of the handle 6 and the handle end of the lever d which may also serve as means for opening or closing the valve, and as soon as the handle lever is released the spring at once forces the nose d into engagement with the rack and the valve islocked against. rotation in either direction. It will also be understood that by means of this construction. the valve may be locked in any desired positionand the amount of'gas, gasolene or other flowing throughthe pipe or pipe coupling may thus be regulated to the desired extent.
The construction shown in Fig. 4 is similar to that in Fig. 1 except that the handle a is omitted and a lug or projection is formed on the head of the valve and between which and the handle end (I? of the lever (Z the spring fis placed. It will be apparent that this construction may be operated in the same manner as that shown in Fig. 1. the lever (l serving as means for opening and but the construction shown in Fig. 1 is preferred because of the fact that the handle e serves to an extent to protect the handleend of the lever and prevent its accidental operation.
Although we have described our proved valve device as applied to any knit or class of pipes used in connection with gas burners or fixtures, oil supply devicesor pipes, or gasolene supply pipes-or connections. the. said improvement may also be used in connection with steam supply pipes, steam radiators and in many other connections or relations.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas or gasolene pipe fixture, 'a' valve casing provided with a plug valve and substance at one side thereof with a segmental rack, the head of the valve being also provided opposite said rack with a laterally directed member, a lever pivoted in the head of the valve and provided at one end with a curved nose adapted to engage said rack, and the other end of which projects in the same direction as said member, and a spring mounted between said member and the projecting portion of said lever.
2. In a gas or gasolene pi e fixture, a valve casing provided with a pl iig valve and at one side thereof with a segmental rack,
'the head of the valve being also provided opposite said rack with a laterally directed member, a lever pivoted in the head of the valve and provided at one end with a curved nose adapted to engage said rack, and the other end of which projects in the same direction as said member, and a spring mounted between said member and the projecting portion of said lever, the projecting portion of said lever also serving as means for disengaging the nose thereof fromsaid rack and as a handle for turning said valve. In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 4th day of November, 1911.
