For convenience 1n fastenlng the spring in place I pref place by the flanges 15 engaging the openings 17 and 1.8.. The plate 13 is further provided with means for guiding the thread,
and this means is made in such form as to offer as little resistance by friction as possible. In the form shown in Fig. 2 I make this guiding means of a bent wire 19, whereas in the modified form shown in Fig. 3 I
make use of a flanged roller 20. In order to reduce the friction of the thread in' passing beneath and supporting the lower weight 6 I also preferably make use of a roller 21 and where the thread passes through the shaft 5 I place means for reducing the friction, such as a porcelain collar 22.
I find that with a spring placed in line with the motion of the upper weight and with proper regulation of the tension of that spring I am enabled to increase very materially the speed at which the old type of device can be run. I find that the lower weight will be elevated by the pull on the thread and that by its momentum it will at the proper time raise the upper weight above the top of the teeth 4, permitting a limited rotation of the spool without imposing on the thread any undue strain in raising the upper weight, and I further find that the spring will at once push the upper weightdown so as to prevent releasing too much thread. The anti-friction devices used by me furthermore assist greatly in securing greater speed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an upright shaft, of top and bottom weights adapted to'reciprocate thereon, thetop weight being provided with means for engaging and limiting the turning motion of the bobbin, and yielding means exert-ing pressure directly in line with the force directed against the top weight tending to force said top weight down.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with an'upright shaft, of top and bottom weights adapted to reciprocate thereon, the top weight being provided with a pawl adapted to engage the bobbin head, and a spring exerting its pressure directly in line with the force directed against the top weight tending to force said top weight down.
3. In a device of the 'class described, the' combination with an upright shaft, of top and bottom weights adapted to reciprocate thereon, the top weight being provided with a pawl adapted to engage the bobbin head, and a coiled spring surrounding said shaft above said top weight tending to force said top weight down directly in the line of the movement of the bottom weight.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with an upright shaft, of top and bottom weights adapted to reciprocate thereon, the top weight being provided with a pawl adapted to engage the bobbin head, a coiled spring surrounding said shaft-above said top weight tending to force said top weight down directly in the line ,of the movement of the bottomweightyand ant-i friction guides for the thread on said bottom weight and above said top weight.
