IMPROVEMENT IN 'MACHINES I'OR PRINTING LABELS ON SEOOLS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARDINER HALL,J1'., of South Willington, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and improved Spool- Printing Machine; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to'make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved spool-printing machine, taken on the plane of the line a: :c, fig. 3.

This inventionrelates to a new machine for imprinting labels directly to the ends of spools.
The invention consists, chiefly, in the'employme'nt cf rotary printing-blocks, which operate in conjunction with aspool-guide, that carries the spools in a straight direction, directly bet-ween the said printing-blocks. The guide may be either in form of an endless belt or chain, or of a reciprocating bar. The rotary printingbars are, preferably, arrangedfin pairs, to print simul ttuieously both ends of a. spool, although they be used to printi but one end of the same.
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of my improved spool-printing machine. The frame is made of suitable material, strong enough to sustain the rna-' chinery of the apparatus, and of such suitable form as may best be adapted to the proper support of all the parts.
From the bed or platform B of the frame, project upward two pairs of standards, a a, which serve as supports for two or more horizontal printing-rollers, C O, as shown. These printing-rollers are provided with the necessary type or printing-surface on their peripheries, in suitable manner. I prefer to arrange each pair of rollers, C,.on the same horizontal plane, and as many pairs, one above the other, as there are colors to be used for the labels. Thus, if two colors are to be used on each end of each spool, there must be two pairs of rollers, as in fig. 1. In some cases, however, it may be desirable to use but one kind of ink on but one end of the spool, when only one printing-roller will be required, a blank pressurc-rolles,'or its equivalent, being used on. the opposite end of the spool.

Each spool, as it drops upon the concave ends of the piece d, is held down upon the same by one arm, 0, of a bell-crank, G.
The bell-crank is pivoted to the bar F, and has a projecting pin, f, at its other arm, g, the said pin moving along the edges of a fixed cam, H, as rnd cated in fig. 2. By means of the arm 0, the spool 18 so clamped that it cannot turn while passing between v the printing-rollers. The rollers C C are revolved either by means of the teeth on the bar F, as lllt he sawing, or by other suitable mechanism, and print upon-the ends of the spool, as the same is carried up between them.
VVhen-the spool has been printed, it is discharged from the supports d by means of small levers, h It, which are pivoted to the said supports. These levers, when at the proper height, strike fixed stops, t, and are by the same swung up, so that the spool will be discharged upon another inclined 'plate, j, on which it rolls ed to a suitable receptacle.

, It is evident that, in place of a reciprocating bar,
an endless apron or chain may be employed for cpnveying the spools along the printing-rollers, in which case suitable supporting-arms or buckets should be] provided on such chain or belts, either those above described, or others of suitable construction.

Having thus. described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The spool-printing machine, consisting of one or more printing-rollers, O, and of a spool-guide or holdor, on which the spools are held fast and moved between said printing-rolls, as set forth.
2. The reciprocating spool-supports d h and bellcrank G 0, combined with inclined planes EJ, located respectively as described, and for the purpose specified.
3. The adiustablesupports 41, secured to the carrier F, and provided with the self-acting discharge-levers h, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination of the pin g and lever k, with fixed incline H and stop'z', to first release and then throw out the spool, in the manner described.
