RECEIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
application l'ed March 1%, 1910. Serial No. 549,514.
To all tokom i may concern:
Be it known that l, @scan lvi. Lamina citizen of, the United States, residing at Gren-oa, in the county of @ook and State of illinois', have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Receivers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
lily invention relates to telephone receivers, and more particularly to telephone receivers of what l call the direct loattery type,-that is, those in which the battery which is used in the transmitter flows also directly through the receiver, and serves=to energize the actuating coil thereof in a manner to place the diaphragm under stress.
ln receivers, as principally used at, the present time, a permanent magnet is used to provide this normal stress in the' diaphraghni, but l nd that when using receivers for common battery systems, l can utilize the battery which :furnishes current to the transmitter directly in the receiver, to take the place of the permanent magnet. lfn receivers oit this kind, it is necessary to provide additionai Weight to compensate for the loss ot the permanent magnet, in order that the receiver inay properly pertorin its auxiliary rfunction of actuating the switclrhoolr, as is Weil understood.. The Weight which ll prefer to employ is reinovable, and is secured preferably hy screwthreaded ineens Within the shell, and my receiver embodies other featured-notably, the provision ot a symmetrical air gap loetWe-en the magnetic portions and the diaphragm, and also other features ot construction for simplifying the manufacture et the parts, all as will *more clearly appear troni the detail description ot the saine, in connection with the accompanying" drawing, in whicli Figure i is a detail sectional vierir or a receiver, showing circuit connections; w'. 2 is a iront view with the sheli, cap, Weight and diaphragm removed; and Fig. 3 is a rear v'eiv the apparatus shown in "n 2; lis a sectional vievv ci the apparatus shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
l" y improved receiver consistsoi'V a coil l, which is under the direct induence ot a hattery inciuded with 'trans- 5 s, ser any but is provided mittcr 3, and which are designed to actuate a distant station consisting ot similar receiver 4c and transmitter 5. lt will bessen from thisthat the battery 2 furnishes current directly to the transmitter and receiver, both in series. The coil l is provided with an end plate 6, and a second end plate 7, which end plate 7 has lugs or ears 8, 8, which support the terminal Wires of said coil, and lead them properly to terminal clips 9, 9, which torni parts of connectors l0, l0, which connectors are associated by means of the connecting pins ll, 1l, with a cord 12, Which cord passes from the exterior of t-he shell to the interior thereof. The coil l has a core 13, which coil and core are set in a cylindrical receptacle le, which is closed at one end, With two longitudinal slots l5, l5, which accommodate the ears 8, when the coil is set in place. e, nut 16 is adapted to engage a screw-threaded extension of the core i3, andsecure itto the U-shapcd meinbei' l?. rlhe lil-shaped member carries a diaphragm support 18, which is of a ringlilte construction, having projecting ears 19, by means oi which it is fastened to the tlwshaped member 17, through the agency ot screws 20, 2G. Ilhe diaphragm 2l is held in place upon a diaphragm support 22 and 'receiver shell 23.
lt Will thus he seen that a very open construction ot diaphragm support is obtained, which inakes the various parts of extremely simple construction, and Jlurtherinore, by reason ot the diaphragm being,`- acted upon oy the core 13 and a cylindrical receptacle le, a uniform distribution of magnetism, relative to the axis of the device, is obtained, and furthermore, a unii'orni air gap vthroughout the entire periphery of the inse netic parts. insulating ineinher 2e is secured to the iii-shaped ineinher l?, hy means oi screws 25, and screws 26 hold the connectors l0 in place.
From the foregoing, it Will he seen that but very ieiv parts compose the entire structure, and ail the parts are rigidly secured to gcther, @The connectors l0 can accommodate the various kind of cord tips in use,
and are thus llexihle and, universal. Within the shell 23 l provide Weight 2?, through which Weight the cord l2 passes, and which Weight is secured in place hy means ot a terrule 28, screw-threaded into lltltl lI claim as new and desire to secure the said weight, said ferrule having a flange overlapping the outer portion of thelshell to hold said weight securel in position.
While I have herein s own and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself to the recise construction and arrangement here- 1n set forth, but y Having thus described my invention, what
by Letters Patent is: l
1. A telephone receiver-of the direct battery type, comprising v.a diaphragm, an actuating electromagnet therefor, a shell for inclosing said diaphragm and electromagnet, a flexible cordleading from the eXterior of said shell to said electromag-v net, a weight removably mounted fin said shell, having a longitudinal aperture through which said flexible cord passes, and a ferrule having screw threaded engagement with said weight for holdin weight in position within the shel said shell being clamped between said weight and said ferrule.
support, a shell and cap said 2. A telephone receiver of the direct batf tery type, having a diaphragm, a diaphragm to hold said support and diaphragm together, an insulating member removably mounted on the outside Jface of said support, connectors mounted upon said member, an electrcmagnet mounted with said diaphragm support and means rojecting through said insulating member to hold said electromagnet in place.
3. A telephone receiver of the rdirect battery type, having a diaphragm, a* diaphragm support, a slotted cylindrical cup of magnetic material open at the diaphragm end, secured to said diaphragm su port, and a coil within saidcup, said coil aving an end plate provided with `ears projecting outside of said cup through said slots.
In witness whereof,- I hereunto subscribe my name this seventh day of March A. D. 1910.
