IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE FOR DOVETAILINGMACHINE- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same4 .To all whom. -it-may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DILL, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machine-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, sut'- iicientto enable others skilled in the class to which myinvention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which makes part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved machinetable.
Figure 2 represents a piece'of stuff, showing the manner of cutting the grooves on the table.
Figures 3 and 4 are detached views of the dovetailed guides.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several iigures.
The nature of my invention consists in a machine table, constructed of two pieces connected to each other at theinner ends bybe'nt pieces, in such a mannel" as to leave an open space between them, through which the saws of the machine may operate, the table being provided with peculiarly-shaped guides and rests, to adapt it especially to machines for grooving and dovetailing. j j
Italso consists in dovetail-shaped guides, adjustable on the table, by means of which perfectly' parallel grooves can be produced.
Fig. 1, in the drawing, represents the machine-table, consisting of two parts, connected to each other at their inner ends by upwardly-curved pieces, so as to leave an open space, S, through which ythe saw, or other grooving tools,l may project when in operation.
Parallel with this slot, and at right angles to it, are formed a number of slots, d, in both sidesof the table, which slots form the bearings for the adjustable rest-s 'R Rl Itz R3, and the adjustable gauges G G g g'. The rests consist of pieces bent at right angles, their horizontal port-ion being provided with threaded bolts passing through slots d, and held on the under side of the table by means of nuts.
The gauges G G are straight pieces, dovetailed downwardly, so as to fit into the dovctailed grooves as they'have been cut. They are also adjustable by means of a bolt extending downwardly through slots d, and a nut.
Gauges g g' are pieces bent at right angles horizontally,` their portions e being dovetailed, one upwardly and one' downwardly.

The dovetail groove o, iig. 2, is first cut, and then slipped over gauge G', which has been adjusted to the proper distance from slot S to leave the desired space between groove o and the next one to be cut. The rests R and R3 are then adjusted, and the operation continues. l
As each groove has been cut, it is slipped over gauge G', thus insuring a perfect gauging ot' the distance between the grooves. l
lo cut the grooves t, iig.'2, the same operation is gone through wit-h, the rpiece B resting against the rests R R2, and the gauge G being used instead of G.
In cutting parallel dovetailed grooves of great length, one of the great diiculties is to prevent the lateral motion of the stuff in which they are out. -l accomplish'this by the gauges g y', slipping one end of the first groove out over the end c of that gauge whichis similarly dovetailed, and pressing the other end of the groove over the other gauge e, thus bind? ing the pieces down firmly while the next groove is cut. In this manner anynumber of perfectly parallel grooves, of any desired length, may be cut.
Ot' course it is obvious that any and all ofthe rests and gauges may be changed to any of the slots (I, as the necessities of the case may require.
Having thus described my invention,
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.v The machine-table, constructed of two pieces connected to each otherby curved pieces, so as to leavea central opening, S, when provided with slots al, rests R Rl R-z R, and gauges Gr. G' y g', all com,- bincd, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described.
2. The dovetailed gauges G G g g', arranged to operate substantially as herein described. v
