THREAD-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 3, 1912.
)Patented Jan, 7,1913. serial No. 675,238.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Amina Pmnnsnn, a subject of the King ot Denmark, residing at lVinthrop, in the county of Suffolk and State ot Massachusetts, have invented new and usetul Improvements in Thread-Carriers, of which the following is a specifica-4 tion.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in thread carriers and is particularlyl applicable to that class of carriers havingthread-masses troni which the thread is drawn in a. direction substantially parallel to the axis ol said thread-mass or ot the spindle upon which said thread-mass is supported.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a thread controller which may be rotated relatively to said thread-mass by the unwinding or removal ot the thread therefrom, but which is normally prevented from rotating relatively to said thread-uniss when said thread is not being removed and thus prevents slack thread vfrom being formed between the tensioning device which is carried by the thread carrier and said thread-mass..
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement. ot' parts set forth in the following specification by which the above object and other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring' to the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section partly in elevation ot' a thread carrier elnbodjj/ine,V my invention.v Fig. 2 is an end elevation ot the device illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig'. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals reter to like parts throughout the several views ot the drawings.
ln the drawings 5 is a carriertrame pret'- erably comprising a base (l, Side pieces 7 and 8 and an end 9 to which is secured a'tensioning device i0, hereinafter more specifically described, and a take up 11 and thread `: guides 12 and 13 also mounted at said end Sl.
adapted to project through a hole 19 in said steni and into an annular `groove 2() formed in the spindle 15, said detent 16 being normally held within said hole 19 and groove 2O by a spring, 30.
The end ot the spindle is tapered or cone-shaped, as at 15', in order that said end may be more easily inserted within the hole 21 in the tubular .stem 141 beyond the projection 18 formed on the detent lt, as said conical end will engage said projection and force the saine outwardly through the hole 19 until the annular `groove 20 has been brought into alinenienttherewith, whereupon said projection will drop into Said annular `groove and lock the same against longitudinal movement in said steun rl`he spindle 15 is adapted to support a thread-uniss Q2 which may be formed on said spindle or may be formed .upon athrcad-nmss holder Q3. The thread constitoting said thread-mass is unwound or withdrawn from the same in a direction longitudinally oft' the spindle l5 or threadinass 2:2 through a `guide Q4 in the end S) of -said carrier trame, thence through the ten sioning device 10, which as shown, consists ot a series of fingers 25, Q5 across which said thread 1s drawn.
Another series ot fingers QG, 2G formed u )on a mcn'iber 27 )ivoted at Q8 QS enefaffo l 7 7 h f1 the opposite side ot' the thread between the lingers Q5, and yieldingfly torce said thread downwardly across said fingers 25, .25 by means ot' a torsional spring,r QS),
' From the tensioning device itl the thread passes through the eye t2, thence to the eye 1l in the end of the take-up lever 1l and through the c ve 13 to the point on the machine of which said carrier lorms a part, where theI work is being formed.
In a thread carrier ot the class shown, it the thread from the thread-mass is rapidly withdrawn or unwound, the thread is a it to be swung outwardly hy centrifugal torce' and when said. feeding is discontinued more or less slack thread will hie formed 'between the tensioning` device and the thread-mass. rl`his is very objectionable tor the reason that said thread is apt to twist and hnot: up and upon the resumption ot the feeding thereof, a broken thread will he the resultas the knot will catch in the tensioningy device or the ,fluides on said carrier.
Another difficulty to he overcome is the ses Lofi relative rotation between the thread-mass and the carrier frame or thread guide El, which also causes slack thread to forni between said guide Q1 and the thread-mass To overcome these ditlienlties, a thread controller 31 is located between said tensioning device and said thread-mass, adapted to retard the univinding of the thread eonetituting the thread-mass 22 on the thread sup- )portv 28, and preferably consists ot' a laterally extending arm SQhaving a thread eye 33 at its outer end adapted to revolve in a path substantially concentric with the outer face of the thread-mass Q2 and is preferably located outside ot said outer tace. rthe arm 32 is formed with a projection Zl-l thereon which is adapted to engage the outer tace of a flange formed upon the end of the ASpindle 15. rlfhe controller 31' is also provided with a second arm 3G disposed sul stantially at right angles to thearni and has rotatable engagement with said spindle, Said arm projecting into a recess 37 extending longitudinally otE said spindle 15 and closed by the flange 35. A, collar 38 is slidable longitudinally of said recess and has rotatable engagement with the arm 3 adjacent to its extremity and is prevented from rotating within said recess by a ltey 39, said key being preferably secured to the inner surface of said recess and adapted to engage the groove i-O in the collar 8 The arm 36 has located adjacent to its extremity, a flange 4l securely fastened thereto. Spiral'extension Spring; l2 is disposed within said recess between the tace t3 ot said collar 38 and the flange encirclingf the arm 2li, and is prevented trom being twisted or injured during the rotation of the controller 3l by said key 39 and groove 40 which prevent the rotation of the collar StilR said springy beingr adapted to press'said collar S8 toward the flange 41 thereby creating; frietion between said flange 4l, and one Jlace of the collar 558 and consequently forcing the arm 36 inwardly, whereby friction is also created between the projection 3ft and the upper tace ot the flange 235. The 't'ictional means, as just described, is preferably ot siifticient ptr-.vcr to prevent the arni in and thread eye from being revolved aboutA said thread-mass by the rotatable movement of said thread-mass 22 relatively to the rarrier frame, but is permitted to he revolved by the unwinding of the thread constituting said thread-mass.
lt will be readily seen that the thread constituting the, thread-mass may be Wound directly on the spindle 15 or may he tlrstV wound anon a holder Shown at Q3 and then slipped upon said Spindle. lf the latter form is adopted, it; is necessary that additional trictional means be interposed hetween said spindle and said holder and for this purpose a spring 4.4 ia
end to said spindle normally' assumes, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, a' bowshaped torni, but upon the placing` of said holder upon said spindle said spring will be VHaiti-nie( ont againsty said spindle and is capable of preventing a rotary movement between said holder and said spindle, and may also be need to preventv said holder from sliding longitudinally on said spindle,
The power of said 'rictional means being.
substantially greater than the iirictional ineans controlling the rotation of the thread controller 3l thereby permitting Said controller to be rotated in said spindle.
llaving thus described my invention what l claim and desire by Letters llatent to Secure is:
