While I am aware that there are several styles of buffers in use for this purpose, they depend upon being bolted or riveted to the vehicle frame, thus requiring that the frame be drilled and some of the bolts replaced,
and requiring considerable time to attach the buffer and at considerable expense.
The object of the present invention is to produce a device of this class thatshall be cheap, durable, efficient, and contains few parts, and be readily and quickly attached without alteration to the vehicle frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the buffer may be adjusted to receive the shock of collision in a horizontal line with respect to the machine to which it is applied.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification, and, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as shown, thatI do not confine myself to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

For securing the device to the vehicle frame 1, without dir lxlling any holes .or disturbing the same, I lave provided a novel clamp capable of adjustment for different sizes and shapes of frames, which comprises a bolt 17, resting in one of the corrugations 15, and which is threaded upon both ends and provided with the nuts 18 while secured thereon by said nuts 18, are the side plates 19, which extend downward past the sides of the frame 1, and which are pro Within For further strengthening the device and to revent any upward movement of the bu er-bar, there is provided a U-clamp 25, secured to the spring 2, near the pivot end thereof; said clamp being connected to the head 23, by a link 26, held in place by the cap screws 27, and 28, in such a manner that said link 26, has a slight movement buffer bar at right angles thereto, a plunger mounted in said socket fitting, a head formed on said plunger adapted to engage the end of the vehicle frame, an impact spring mounted on said plunger between its head and said fitting, a slotted lug formed on the head of said plunger, a block adapted to be adjustably mounted to the head of said plunger, said block formed with a corrugated upper surface and an adjustable clamping means for securing said block to the vehicle frame.
