CHICKEN-COOP.
Application filed September 28 1912. Serial No. 722,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT O. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, resident of Amit-yville, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Chicken-Coops; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
The invention has relation to boxes or coops designed mainly for use in the transportation of small or young chickens or chicks, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.-
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the inner member ofthe coop and of the rectangular frames within the same; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the coop; Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 5 is a detail side view of the cover blank as folded into flat form; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the inner member; Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the rectangular frames as folded into flat form; and Fi 8 is a transverse section of a form of the invention having a single rectangular frame.
In these drawings the numeral 1, designates a box or coop composed of an outer slidable cover 2 open at the ends, and an inner member 3 having a bottom 4, upturned ends 5, and inturned top flaps 6.
Located within this box is a plurality, preferably four, open top and open bot-tom rectangular frames 7, located side by side close together longitudinally within said box, and being designed to contain the live chicks, these frames being closed at the bottom by the bottom 4 of said inner member and at the top by the flaps 6 thereof, the bottom and top of the slidable cover also underlying and overlying the bottom and the top flaps of the inner member to make a double thickness of the material of which the coop is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D943, 31, 1912,
and the sides of the cover and ends of the ina middle serpentine layer, giving the req-- uisite stiffness to brace the. coop against collapsing and at the same time keeping out the cold. I
- In order that the chicks may have the necessary air for breathing or to ventilate the coop, I provide each side of the cover with a series of longitudinal perforations 8, and the sides of the rectangular frames with a similar longitudinal series of perforations 9, the two series of perforations of the said frames and of the cover being designed to register when the parts are in place. And in order that the chicks may be kept warm and yet well provided with air in wintertime, the perforations. 9 upon one side of each rectangular frame are comparatively small with relation to the perforations 9 at the opposite side of said frame, so that when the rectangular frames are turned to bring the smaller perforations in register with the cover perforations the cold air of winter will not enter so easily, and rain or snow will also be kept out.
In summer, the rectangularframes are turned to bring the larger perforectangular frames are all collapsible andfoldable to flat form for storage or shipment in small space.
When the cover is slid upon the coop, with the chicks in place therein, a drop of glue 10 is placed previo-usly upon the top of each flap 6 of the inner member, so that when the glue becomes dry, the flaps will be connected to the cover and the coop sealed against being opened except by cutting or destruction of the outside cover. The chicks are liberated by lifting the rectangular frames from the bottom of the inner member upon which they rest. The double thickness of the material of which the coop is composed upon all sides .of the coop serves also to prevent collapse of the coop.
The invention is capable of being made with a line of perforations at one side only of the cover member, and a single open top and open bottom rectangular frame having the perforationsof different sizes at opposite sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this case one series'of perforations of said frame will be closed by the closed side of the cover, and the frame may be turned to bring either the large or the small perforations thereof in register with the perforations at the side of the cover.
It is preferred to provide the rectangular frames with perforations 9 in the ends thereof, to provide for additional circulation of air through the coop. This circulation of air is facilitated by the registration of the perforations of the inner sides of the rectangular frames.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A chicken coop, comprising an open end slidable cover having a longitudinal series of perforations at a side thereof, an
inner member having a bottom, upturned ends and i'nturned top flaps, and an open top and open bottom rectangular frame fitting within said cover and between the bottom and the top flaps of said inner member,
oaaaae said frame having at one side a series of large perforations and at the opposite side a series of small perforations, one series of perforations of said frame being designed to register with the perforations of said end slidable cover having a longitudinal series of perforations at each side thereof, an inner member having a bottom, upturned ends and inturned top flaps, and a plurality of open to frames having each at one side a series of large perforations and at the other side a series of small perforations, said frames being reversible to bring either series of perfora-tions in register with the cover perforations to admit more or less air to the coop.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
