FASTENER FOE VESTIBULED-OAR CURTAINS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. GRUM- LEY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have made a certain new an useful Invention in Fasteners for Vestibuled-Car Curtains; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

vestibule cars, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

The object of the invention is to provide an improvement designed not only to secure positive action both in fastening and unfastening, but also to avoid casual operation of the parts, tending to militate against the usefulness of such handle fasteners.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the handle clip or plate, which is designed to be secured to the plate or rod 1), at the free end of the curtain. This plate is provided with an upper lug 0, having a bearing at (Z, for the tang or gravity catch 6. This gravity catch 6, is made solid and heavy and is provided with a vertical socket h, in its bottom, adapted to receive the upper or free end of a handle bar we, the lower end of which is pivoted to the lower lug Z, of the plate. This lug is made longer than the upper lug, being as long as said upper lug and the gravity catch, and in this way the handle bar is brought into parallelism with the curtain bar. Guard collars p, are provided near the ends of the handle bar, said collars having larger diameter than the body of the handle bar, and being designed to obviate any casual operation of the gravity catch, whether by hand or by the curtain hook of the connected car, which might occur through the shaking of the cars, changing their relative vertical position at their connected ends. for connection with one end of a chaln s, the other end of which is designed to be attached in raised position to the frame of the car, usually above the curtain handle. The chain, although shorter than the curtain, is designed to be slack when the curtain is secured by its handle bar to the hook plate 2, of the attached car. This hook plate consists of a base for attachment base having a lateral offset portion r, on which is a hook beak t, designed to fit neatly over the handle bar anywhere between its guard collars, these being of greater diameter than the span of the hook, and serving to prevent it from casually coming in contact with the parts to which the ends of the handle are connected.

The handle bar 4%, is provided, above its upper collar 10, with a tenon lug 70, designed to engage neatly the vertical socket h, in the underside of the gravity catch, when the latter is in looking position.

Upon separation of two cars, one carrying the curtain and the other the curtain hook, to which the free end of the curtain is connected by the handle, the chain 8, pulling the gravity catch upward, releases the upper end of the handle, which falls or is turned down by the act-ion of the curtain hook, and the curtain is at once freed without injury and rolled up on its car. The projection or offset for the hook on the plate a, is designed to bring the hook outward from the car frame so that the curtain will be held away from parts which are liable to rub against it and subject it to wear or injury. Being beveled on the far side to, this offset provides for easy engagement of the handle bar with the hook.
