Description

D. J. HURLEY. DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 17, 1912.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
COLUMBIA -PLANGORAPH 60., WASHING-TON, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT orrron DAVID JAMES HURLEY, OF SALE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID Janus HuRLnY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, &c., residing at Sale, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks and Closers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a door check and closer which will be of simple construction; readily installed; and wherein the cost of manufacture thereof will be comparatively small.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete in applied position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the door open; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view of one of the details; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified construction thereof.
Referring to the construction in detail, the device consists of an arcuate bar at secured to a lintel 0 and a frame (Z, and to which frame the door a is swung in the usual manner on hinges Z). The respective ends of the arcuate bar m are bent, as at m and m to pivotally fit within the apertured lugs 70 formed on the supporting plate 70.
A bracket 6 having an arm f is suitably fixed on the door a, and is provided with a boxing or casing 9 through which the arcuate bar m passes. A pair of cheek pieces or jaws i and z" are located within the boxing g, and are shaped to conform with the bar m, and have for their purpose to frictionally engage with said bar and silence the engagement of the bracket therewith. Said pieces 2' and i are constructed of leather, rubber, or other similar material, and are retained within the boxing through the medium of a closure plate h, that is pivotally mounted on said boxing, as at h. The opposite end of the boxing (not shown) Specification of Letters Patent.

with an integral wall having a suitable opening through which the bar 0% passes, as will be understood.
The degree of friction between the pieces a and z" and the bar at is adapted to be regulated through the medium of a plate 7' that is forced against the member i through the medium of a rod j, that has a threaded portion j that screw threads in the downward extension of said casing g. A thumb nut, or similar device, y" is provided for turning the rod j for adjusting the plate j and a screw j prevents the withdrawal of the rod j by engaging with the enlarged screwthreaded portion j. hen the members i and i are clamped lightly against the bar m, the swinging of the door is proportionately retarded, and if said members 2' and z" are clamped tightly against said bar we the door will be held against movement from any position to which it may be set.
In the modified construction (Fig. of the parts just referred to, the casing g has the wall thereof divided and projecting outwardly to provide lips g and g and the lip g has an extended portion 9*. A bolt 7' passes through the lips g and g screw-threaded engagement with a nut 7' formed on the end of the adjusting rod 3'. The turning of the nut j will operate to clamp the split sleeve or ring 2' against the bar m to secure the door. Said sleeve is also adapted to be clamped to frictionally engage the bar for retarding the movement of the door.
A spring (I of spiral design is mounted on the arcuate bar m, and is intended for serving as a buffer to the door and as a closer therefor. The spring is also adapted to be moved onto the straight portion m. Sai spring is adapted to act under different de grees of tension by having certain portions of its length removed from action. In the present instance, the means for accomplishingly mounted on the plate 70 at 0 and having a hooked end 0 which engages within an aperture of the series a formed in the bar m. The bar 0 is adapted to be moved to different positions through the medium of a rod 0, that engages at 0 with the bar 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. With this arrangement, certain lengths or convolutions of the spring may be isolated from the remainder thereof, and since this is elective it will be and has ing this result consists of a rod 0 swingseen that the spring is capable of acting under variable tension. A washer or buffer piece 9" is secured against the end of the spring which contacts with the plate h of the bar bracket.
The closing movement of the door may be interrupted or silenced through the medium of a chain u, which is connected to a hook carried by the bracket casing g, and having a short length 21. that carries a pin L. Said pin 6 is adapted to be inserted in any one of the series of apertures n formed in the bar m. andv accordingly as said aperture is selected to one side or the other of the casing g, the
. o l extent of opening or closing movement of the door a would be determined and stopped. The free end of the chain at is provided with a hook 24- adapted to be engaged at any point with the spring 9, and by reason of which engagement the closing of the door vould be made resilient when the slack of the chain a is taken up through the closing movement of said door, as will be understood.
T he bar m is provided with rings of resilient material m set at suitable intervals, and which have for their purpose to frictionally engage with the clamping piece, or pieces, in the bracket casing g of the door, and interrupt or break the opening or closing of the door, as the case may be.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination. with a door frame and a door swinging therein of a curved arm mounted on the door frame; an adjustable spring on said arm providing a door buffer and closer; a device carried by the door adapted to engage with said spring; and a radially disposed and pivotally mounted bar having a pin adapted to engage said. arm and cut out variable lengths of the spring Copies of l l l l I whereby to graduate the resiliency thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door frame and a door swinging therein of a curved arm mounted on the door frame; an adjustable spring on said arm; a device carried by the door and adapted to engage with said spring to provide a door buffer and closer; a flexible member carried by the door and adapted to engage with sa'd spring at different points and provide a door check; and a device for regulating the resiliency of said spring substantially as described.
3. The combination with a door frame and a door swinging therein of a curved arm mounted on the door frame; an adjustable spring on said arm; a device carried by the door and adapted to engage with said spring to provide a door buffer and closer; a flexible member carried by the door and adapted to engage with. said spring at different points to provide a door check; and a radially disposed and pivotally mounted bar having a pin adapted to engage said arm and cut out variable lengths of the spring whereby to graduate the resiliency thereof substantially as described.
4. The combination with a swinging door of an arcuate bar mounted above the door, and provided with a plurality of perforations, a spiral spring mounted on said bar, a pivotally mounted rod having a hooked end adapted to engage with said apertures for regulating the tension of said spring, a bracket mounted on the door and provided with an arm having a casing through which said bar passes, said casing adapted to engage with said spring, and flexible connections between the bracket arm and said spring substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
