To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER H. BILLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mops, and particularly to a mop in which transverse strands of yarnror like material are held within a broad, narrow head.

In devices of this sort the cost of assembling has been an item of very serious importance as the amount of manual labor involved is very considerable and seems to be one in which a great amount of waste has occurred.

It is the object of my present invention to provide a mop construction in which the manner of assemblage may be rapid and positive and from which the nished mop will be produced at a low cost and in extremely neat and eiiicient form.

The construction and manner of assemblage of my device will be more fully described in the specification which follows.

In the specification and in the drawings which form a part thereof I have shown and made particular reference to a form of my device which I have found well adapted to practical manufacture and usage.

Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawing t-Figure 1 is a front view of my mop with handle broken away, Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, prior to entry to retaining strip, Fig. 3 is a similar view with the retaining strip in place, Fig. 4 is a detail of the mop end in section, and Fig. 5 is the buffer piece removed.

I form my mop from a metal channel 1 having one side open, as at 2, with an inturned edge on each side, as indicated at 3. The strands of mop material 4, of yarn or the like, are laid across the opening 2 of the back member 1, as indicated in Fig. 2.

copies of this patent may be obtained for tive cents each, by addressing the A U-shaped clamping piece of resilient stock, as indicated at 5, is forced down until it occupies the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position its ends 51 expand within the edge 3 of the back 1.

A handle socket 6 is provided in which a handle may be screwed, or otherwise fastened. This handle'piece consists of a tubular section having inward flanges 61 which are riveted, as shown at 7 to the edge of the channel back.

When the clamping strip 5 has been forced within the back member 1 the yarn 4 will be firmly wedged and held uniformly in place. The ends of the back 1 are finished by the insertion of rubber plugs 8 having suitable projecting Vheads to act as buffers in engaging wood work or furniture. The shank 81 of the head 1 enters within the end of the channel back and is cemented or riveted in place.

Various modifications may obviously be made in the construction and operation of my device, all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claim.

What I, therefore, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A mop comprising a back consistiner of a three-sided channel strip open on the fourth side and having inturned marginal flanges on each edge of the fourth side, a longitudinal U-shaped clamping Vpiece sprung w1thin said channel piece, a mop material passing around said clamping piece and within said back, said clamping piece having its free edges expanded beneath said fianges and coperating therewith to hold the parts in assembled relation.
