CHARLES STOLLBERG, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
OYSTER-DISPLAY REFRIGERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES STOLLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oyster-Display Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sheet metal display and icing cases, cans or boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined sheet metal display and icing case or can for keeping, showing and dispensing oysters or other articles, which will be of a simple, strong, efficient and durable construction, which will be thoroughly sanitary and effectually exclude air, dust, dirt and other contamination from the oysters, prevent the ice from undue melting, enable the oysters to be conveniently dipped or dispensed therefrom without unnecessary exposure, and in which the oysters may be attractively displayed to view without uncovering or exposing' same to dirt, dust, air or other contamination.
My invention consists in the means herein shown and described for practically accomplishing this object or result, the same being particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined oyster display and icing can or case embodying my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections on lines 2-2 and 3-3, respectively, of Fig. 1; and Fig.V
l is a horizontal section on line 1--11 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing 1 represents a sheet-metal double wall vessel, preferably of galvanized sheet-steel, and preferably of a general cy lindrical shape, and comprising an outer sheet-metal body 2 and outer bottom 3, and an inner body 4t and inner bottom 5 and an linsulating or non-heat conducting filling or bracing and soldered to the inner body 4; and the body 11 is provided at its upper end with an external horizontal flange 10 closing the upper end of the insulating chamber 11 between the inner and outer walls, said flange 10 having a down turned flange 12 which is preferably soldered to the outer body 2 thus securing the inner and outer bodies rigidly together and also preventing any possibility of water or moisture entering the insulating chamber 11 or injuring the non-heat conductor filling or packing 6 therein.
The double wall body of the case or can 1 is provided near the lower end thereof with a drain faucet, or nozzle 13, the valve of which has a handle 14 for opening and closing the same.
At its upper end the inner body l is provided with a segmental sheet-metal brace or support 15 having a depending inclined member 1G securely soldered to said body 4 on the inside thereof, the horizontal portion of said brace being flush with the horizontal flange 10 of said body 4.
The outer body 2 is provided at its upper end with an external roll 17 embracing a stiffening wire 1S, and with a horizontal segmental double wall support 19, the lower member 20 of which fits flat against and is soldered to the flange 10 and support 15 of the inner body 4, and the outer member of which is provided with a flange 21 embracing the external roll 17 of the outer body 2. The double wall segmental support 19 is thus very firmly and rigidly secured to the double wall body of the can or case 1 and thereby adapted to properly sustain its hinged plate glass cover, the support 19 being provided at its inner straight edge with a hinge eye 221, to receive the hinge pin 22 of the cover. The hinged display and sealing cover 23 of my oyster Vcan or case 1 comprises a glass plate 24, preferably of plate glass, surrounded and embraced by a sealing rim or ring 25 of sheet-metal, of channel form in cross section, and having a truncated or straight edge 26 at one side furnished with hinge eyes 27 to receive the hinge pin 22 by which the cover is hinged to the body of the can or case. The upright wall 28 of the metal frame or rim 25 of the glass plate 24 fits snugly and tightly within the upstanding portion 29 of the outer body 2 which projects above the horizontal flange l of the inner body 4 and thus acts as a friction seat wall in connection with said wall29 to close the can or case 1 substantially tight and to effectually exclude dust, dirt and other contamination from the oysters within the can, while the horizontal flange of the inner body 4 affords a firm l@ ledge and support for the heavy plate glass cover to rest and shut down upon and also perfects the closure. The upper and lower flanges or members 30, 3l of the metal frame or rim 25 are preferably much wider (as shown at 32) at the straight or hinge side of the cover to give further strength and stiffness thereto.
'Ihe oyster container 33 of my display can or case l preferably comprises a sheet-metal 2@ body 34 having a bottom 35 double seamed thereto and provided at its upper end with an external bead or shoulder 36 and an internal roll 37 to adapt it to receive a slip cover 38, the iange 39 of which is preferably provided with a roll 40 at its lower edge. The slip cover 38 is removed while the case lis being used for display or sale of the oysters, but should be applied at night or when the oysters in the can are being simply stored.
To limit the extent to which the plate glass display cover 23 may be opened, I provide the same with a stop chain or connection 4l connected at one end to the cover 23 by an attachment or eye 42, and at its other end to the inner body 4 by a similar attachment or eye 48.
The outer body 2 is provided near its upper end with a pair of handles 44 connected thereto by ears 45.
I claim:
