mechanism; from the crank-shaft. Such train includes a connecting valve rod l5, and a rock lever 16, which is connected to the crank-shaft by 'means of an eccentric, as shovvn, or in any suitable manner adapted to impart oscillatory movement to the lever. The valve rod is contained Wholly within the pipe or conduit 1-1, being pivotally connected to the end of the rock lever therein and direct connected to the pump valve, that is without the intervention of stuing box connections, so that it will thus vvork in and through the junction of the conduit and the valve chest. Various different types of pump valves may bc"e1nployed in place of the particular type illustrated in the drawings, and in such case the connection with the valve rod may be varied accordingly, but the location of the rod Within the conduit and within the junction of the conduit and valve chest avoids the necessity for the usual stuiiing box in the. latter, aswell as certain other jointed connections which will be recognized by those familiar with this subject.
The rock lever 1G extends through the side of the conduit 14, to the interior of the casing or standard 21. Without disturbying the isolation of the interior .from the exterior of the conduit, and for this purpose is journaled or fulcrumed in a part Which forms the wall of the conduit inthe region adjacent to the lever, The conduit is' pref-A erably extended laterally toward the pump casing, as shown at 17, in order to meet a corresponding projecting seat formed on the pump casing, and the journal for lthe rock lever is disposed in the latter part. Such journal is formed by a pair of opposed bearing surfaces 19, each having a circular section concentric to the axis of the lever, and the latter is formed with opposite Winglike enlargements Q0, with correspondingly curved faces engaging on the faces 19, so as to form a ball-and-socket type of journal for the lever, but as the bearing faces are preferably cylindrical, the oscillation of the lever is thereby maintained in a fixed plane. The said lever may be .maintained on its bearing thus formed by the curvature of the bearings themselves, but a cross-shaft 22, is
-desirably added, such shaft .being of course concentric to the' opposite bearing faces and preferably held in sleeves 23, which give it the capacity of some lateral adjustment so that it may be set up as occasion demands to takeup Wear of the faces 19 and 20. The ends of the lateral projections 20, being least subject to Wear` are found to maintain a-substantially leak-tight join'twith. the.
ends of the bearings without providinggaskets or filling therefor although such addition can be madev if found necessary. lt will be observed that the tight fulcrum joint of the' rock lever is so locatedthat it is saine system that lubricates the crank shaft.. From the foregoing it will be seen that,
the valve operating mechanism is entirely concealed from view and is extremely siinlple in construction and mode of operation, but that the interior joint of the valve rod and the fulcrum joint are both accessible for attent-ion When needed, the former through the manhole Q11, and 'the latter through the inside of the pump casing or standard 21, which mayl be inclosed with suitable cover plates, if desired.
