to the device for slidably connecting the anchor to the standard, whereby the standard may be first driven separately from the anchor, when the'anchor is thereafter driven and secured in place upon the standard by a brace and bolt.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section drawn on line m-m of Fig. 2.
Like parts are represented by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
1 is a standard, which is formed of ordinary commercial iron, U shape in cross section, when it is cut into the required lengths and rovided with one or more apertures 2, for t e reception of the brace retaining bolt 3. The lower end of the standard is then preferably flattened and pointed as shown at 4, to facilitate driving.
The anchor com rises two plates 5 and 6. The plate 5, pre erably converges downwardly from its u per edge 7 to its lower edge 8. A short iiorizontal slit 9 is then formed, when the portions of the plate above and below the slit are curved toward the right and left in opposite directions, so as to form the curved fastening flanges 10 and 11, when said flanges 10 and 11 are respectively secured to the front rectangular plate 6 by bolts 13, 13. The flanges 10 and 11 are curved to conform to and nicely fit the exterior surface of the standard 1, as
more clearly shown in Fig. 3, .while the plate the standard and are retained at any desiredpoint of adjustment nearer to or farther from its lower end, according to the length of the bracemember 14. The lower end of the brace member is secured to the upper'rear corner of the anchor by the belt or rivet 15, which is inserted through holes provided therefor in said brace member and anchor, and the upper end is secured to the standard 1 by the bolt 3. To more securely retain the anchor in place, I preferably provide the upper and lower ends of the rectangular plate 6 upon the respective sides of said standard, with diagonal slits 16, 16, when the severed portions of said plate form lugs 18, which are bent over and against the opposing convex surface of said standard, as shown in Fig. 2, when they coiiperate with the opposing flanges 10 and 11 in retaining said anchor in place upon the standard. The lower ends'of the standard 1 are preferably flattened, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby they are caused to more readily puncture the earth as the standard is being driven. The apertures 2 are preferably made slightly elongated to facilitate entering the bolt 3.
The brace member 14 is preferably formed of channel iron, whereby the maximum strength of the material is attained at the minimum weight of material.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-

In a device of the described class, the combination of a standard, U-shaped in cross section, an anchor comprising two vertically arranged plates, one ed e of one of said plates being provided with a plurality of integrally formed outwardly curved members adapted to surround and closely fit two opposite sides of the convex surface of said standard, and a brace secured at its upper end to said standard and at its lower end to said anchor.
