To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. MELTON, a citizen of the United States residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Apparatus for Inking-Rollers; and I do hereby declare thetfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new and useful device for cooling the inking rollers of printing presses.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved cooling device for inking rollers of printing presses which will insure a proper and uniform carrying of ink thereby andminimize all wear and deterioration of such rollers.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient cooling device adapted to be conveniently applied to the vexist-ing types of inking rollers.
IIn the drawings accompanying and forming a part of thisy application, similar reference characters indicate similar parts thereof.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates any usual inking rollers coperating'with a reciprocating bed 2 and providedlwith a distributing roller 3. The bed is shown provided With a rack 4 for actuating a pinion 5 on a stub shaft 6 journaled yin a frame 7,

a distributing roller 3 extends slidably through journal bearings` 13 in the frames 7 and is provided with col lars '14 for engaging opposite sides of a rAn air-supply pipe 17 is slidably supported on saddles 18 on the frames 7 and provided with any suitable flexible conneci distributing roller 3. The air-supply piper 17 is provided with a series of nozzles 22 for directing air jets against the rollers l.
From the above description it will be understood that my invention providesan improved construction in which the nozzles 22 on the reciprocating pipe 17 will direct cooling jets of air uniformly along the entire surface of the rotating inking rollers.
Ihe inking rollers of existing types of printing presses being generally composed of some plastic material often become heated and softened as a result of friction caused by the rotating and reciprocating motion of the distributing roller. The result of this heating and softening is to cause an uneven dis-y tribution of ink by said rollers, and also a considerable amount of ywear upon the rollers themselves. rIhis uneven distribution of ink and the wear upon the rollers would be greatly minimized by the use of the above described means of cooling.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent i 1. In combination with an inking apparatus consisting of rotating rollers and a roller mounted for reciprocation longitudinally of said rotating rollers, an air pipe having nozzles directed toward said rotating rollers, and means to reciprocate said airL pipe synchronously with said reciprocating roller.
2. In an inking apparatus, rotating rollers, arelatively reciprocating roller mounted to inove longitudinally of said inking rollers, an air pipe slidably mounted and having nozzles thereon directed toward said rotating rollers, and means connecting said reciprocating roller and the air pipe to cause said air pipe and the reciprocating roller to move synchronously.
3.
