Be it known that I,V W'ILLIAM C. GAGNoN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at I-luron, in the county of Beadle ard State` of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tampers, of which the followingk is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention comprehends certain new devices and relates more particularly to a hand operated ice tamper adapted for use in packing ice cream freezers and tubs.

It has heretofore ordinarily been the practice, in packing ice cream freezers and similar receptacles, to first mix the ice with the salt in a heap on the iioor and to then shovel the mixed ice and salt into the tub or the like, this manifestly resulting in a considerable waste in both the ice and the salt and a loss by reason `of melting. Or, another method heretofore employed has been to pack the tub or similar receptacle by putting in a layer of salt and a layer of ice, another layer of salt, etc., this last named method being a slow process as is evident.

With a knowledge of these conditions, my invention has for its primary object to provide an ice tamping device which willresult in a saving of the salt and which will be simple in construction and durable and eflicient in operation, whereby the tub or the like-may be filled with ice, the salt disposed y which,

on the top of the mass of ice and as the ice tamping device ismanipulated, the salt lbeing caused to run or flow down the channels or grooves with which the tamper 1s formed rand thereby thoroughly mixed with the ice.

rlhe invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class and to render them more useful and commercially desirable.

Vith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in Figure l is a side elevation. Referring more particularly to the drawings, ll indicates the body of the tamper,

which is preferably of a single piece yof suitable wood or other material and tapered off toward one end to formthe handle portion 2, having anenlargement 3 formed at the outer end to prevent. the hands from slippingl off of the handle. The end of the tamper opposite the handle 2 is enlarged as shown at et and is provided with the circularlyarranged longitudinal grooves or channels 5 which increase in depth toward the end of the tamper as shown at 6.

It will be readily apparent that by having my improved tamper constructed with the channels 5 and the strips 8 with the cap 10 that there will be little if any chance for the tamper to split or chip 0H and become entirely worn out after a short periodfof use.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be readilyk apparent that I have provided a simple and efficient hand ice tamper which is sanitary and at the same time is of y such construction that it will not easily split or become worn after ashort period of use.
