To all whom it may concern:

Be it known. that I, FREDERICK I-I. FosrER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification;

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in milk bottle caps such as are commonly cut from paste board, card board, or the like, and the object of my invention is to provide a cap which is simple and cheap in construction, which can be removed by the hand without the use of any instrument, and further to provide a cap which will be milk-tight to prevent leakage from the bottle, and one which will be no more expensive to manufacture than the ordinary cap now in common use.

With these and other objects in view myinvention consists in certain constructions even when tightly wedged into the mouth of combinations and arrangements of parts the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing wherein the same part is designated by'the same reference numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top portionof a in accordance with m invention; Fig. '2 is a central longitudinal section of F ig. 1 showing however the tab forming portion of the cap raised; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cap removed from the tab in the position shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 2, showing however the tab in full lines in its normal position, and in dotted lines in its raised position.

5 designates a milk bottle of ordinary type provided internally adjacent its mouth with a shoulder 6 on which the closing cap rests when inserted in position.

7 designates my closing cap cut from card board, paste board or the like, and provided with a curved cut 8 extending from the periphery of the cap into the body thereof,

said out being preferably formed on an angle as shown, whereby the tab portion 9 formed by the cut is supported in the plane of the body of the cap. The diameter of the cap is slightly greater than the diameter of the mouth of the bottle above the shoulder 6, so that when the cap is forced into the position shown in Fig. 1 to close the bottle the edges of the slit 8 will be forced together and a tight joint formed. The slit extendingthrough the periphery of the cap permits of a. slight compression of-the cap when the same is forced into position, so that the slit is notonly closed so as to be milk-tight,

but the 'cap more firmly wedged against thesides of the bottle mouth.

In order to withdraw theicap from the bottle it is only necessary to run the finger nail into the cut 8 with the tab 9 and pull out the cap. It will also be noted that as soon as the tab is lifted into approximately the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the cap will yield so that it can be readily removed the bottle.

When it is desired to replace the cap it can readily be done by placing the same back into the bottle andforcing down the tab 9. If preferred the tab 9 can bf course be forced down slightly below the plane of the cap and then the body of the cap engaged on the under side and lifted.

I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle cap comprising a circular disk of slightly greater diameter than the mouth of the bottle into which it is to be placed, said disk having a slit extending from within the body of the disk through its periphery whereby a tab which may be lifted is formed and whereby the disk may be compressed when forced into position in the bottle mouth.
