To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. AN- TI-IONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. James, in the county of- Phelps and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stirring Device, of which the following is a specification.

The pins or other securing members 32 are passed through the outer ends of the arms and through the tenons or tongues 30 to at tach the paddles 31 to the arms. These paddles 31 are provided with openings, and when the shaft 9 is rotated are made to rotate therewith for stirring the contents of the kettle at the upper end of the same, and the arms 22 and 23 being slidably disposed in the opening 21 in the shaft permit the paddles to be adjusted transversely or radially of the shaft to accommodate the kettle. as will be understood.
A paddle 33 fits in the cross slot 40 in the lower end of the shaft 9 and has a re cessed or cut away portion 35 in its upper edge receiving the shaft and also an open slot 36 in its lower edge, which slot registers with the slot 39. A second paddle 34; fits in the slot 39 and the slot 36, and is arranged at right angles to the paddle 33, the paddle 34: having an open slot 38 in its upper edge receiving the former paddle and having a recessed or cut away portion 37 in its upper edge at the outer end of the slot 38, which recessed or cut away portion receives the shaft 9. The upper and lower edges of the transverse paddles 33 and 34 are arranged in common planes, and the paddles are frictionally held in the lower end of the shaft 9 in the manner described, the transverse slots 39 and 40 forming fingers 41 which extend or fit in the corners between the said paddles, and which fingers terminate short of the lower edges of the paddles. In assembling the paddles 33 and 34 with the shaft 9, the paddle 33 is first inserted into the slot 40, the shaft being received by the recessed or cut away portion 35, which will constrain the paddle 33 against lateral displacement and thereby retain the slot 36 in registration or coincident wit-h the slot 39 in the shaft 9. The paddle 34 is then inserted into the registering slots 39 and 36, and the two paddles 33 and 3 1 are thus readily attached to the 'lower end of the said shaft.
In use, the bar 8 is secured on the kettle, which will bring the paddles 31, 33 and 34; within the kettle, the latter paddles being arranged adjacent the bottom of the kettle, and the operator by grasping the free end of the bar 14: may conveniently rotate the crank 11, which will cause the shaft 9 to be rotated in order to stir the contents of the kettle by means of the paddles. This device permits the operator to stir the contents of the kettle at a suitable distance to one side of the same in order to prevent his hands from being scalded or otherwise injured. This device is particularly adapted for use in stirring apple butter, but it is understood that the same may be used for various other purposes of like character. When the device is not in use, the same may be readily dismantled or collapsed, this be ing effected by removing the pin 12 from the crank 11 and the secondary portion 10 of the shaft 9 which will permit the crank to be removed, and thereby permit the shaft to be drawn from the bar 8. The pins 25 are then removed from the arms 22 and 23, which will permit the arms to be withdrawn from the shaft 9, and the paddles 33 and 34: may also be disengaged from the lower end of the shaft 9. In this manner the device may be compactly stored or shipped, and may be readily erected when desired, the device being substantial when erected, and being simple and inexpensive in construction. The paddles, arms 22 and 23, the shaft 9, the crank 11, and the bar 1 1 may all be constructed of wood if so desired, and preferably so, but it is understood that various other materials may be employed in the construction thereof. The device is readily applicable to the kettle by means of the catches 15 and 20, and may be used on various kettles. This device may also be constructed in various sizes, proportions, and styles, as will be apparent to those familiar in the art. It is further understood that this invention is otherwise susceptible of alteration in its details within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A collapsible stirring device embodying a shaft adapted to be suspended in various vessels and having a transverse opening therethrough, a pair of arms overlapping each other and having their overlapped portions passing slidably through the said opening, means for adjustably locking the said arms together and paddles carried by the outer ends of the said arms.
2. A collapsible stirring device embodying a vertical shaft adapted to be suspended in various vessels and having a transverse opening therein, a pair of arms overlapping each other and having their overlapped portions passing slidably through the said open ing, pins insertible through the said arms to adjustably lock them together, and paddles carried by the outer ends of the said arms.
