. of an oil can, and the primaryobject of the ,invention is to provide a locked upon the trough simple andl effective device of thischaracter comprising a single element which is soarranged with relation to the trough as. to be edectively as well. as to be readily removable from the trough.
V With the above object in view, and others which will be more apparent as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. Y
In the drawings, accompanying this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement showing the same in an applied position upon anoil can. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary oil can. These cans, as is well known, are provided with 'a ieXible bottom and have their top formed with a ,projecting threaded cover which is generally integrally constructed with the can.
The threaded collar' designated by the numeral 2 of the oil can is in the present instance adapted to receive the threaded end 3 of a spout 4 comprising parts of the improvement. The spout 4, directly above the 'threaded end 3, is formedr with an `annular ends inturned and eX- and the said inturned portion is adapted to receive a suitable washer 6, constructed of'leather, rubber or other suitable compressible material, and which is adapted to tightly close 'the joint between the Vspout'and the collar 2 of the can 1.
The spout 4, disposed from its connection with the flange 5 and secured to the free eX- tremity of the said flange, is a substantially rectangular trough 7. This trough projects a suitable distance beyond each of the opposite faces of the flange, and the said trough flange 5 which has its tended downwardly,

is adapted to serve as a receptacle for the oil delivered from the can 1. The opposite transverse .edges of the rectangular trough 7 are each provided with suitable openings, the later alining, and adapted to receive a suitable locking rod des-` ignated by andhas one of its ends-bentdownwardly Aand inwardly so that the offset portion` thereof resiliently contacts with the under designated by-the numeral 9, is adapted to the said openings are A the numeral ,8. This lock is preferably constructed ofastrand of wire,
exert a pressure'upon the bottom of theinf clined trough so as to sustain the locking rod in aproper position therein. Therod 8 fibrous material 10 which is arranged within the" trough. JThis material 10 isi adaptedlto serve as a brush or daubery whereby lthe lubricant is applied to the different surfaces ofv machinery` to be oiled. The material comprising the member 10 is preferably formed from a sponge, waste, or other suitable porous material and by arranging the rod as above kdescribed it will be noted that the said membery vf i 10 may be readily removed from the in# clined trough 7 when desired and a new member 10 may be supplanted. It will be noted that by the peculiarcconstruction of the locking member 8 the angular part.
thereof, which engages one of the ends of the trough serves as a finger hold whereby the said locking member may be withdrawn from the trough andkr again inserted through the trough to provide for the adjustinent of the member 10 with relation to Y the bottom of the trough. kFurthermore it will be understood that the finger 9 of the saidymember, which is adapted tov exert a tension toward the main arm of the lock Lautomatically sustains the lock in its position withy relation to the trough without danger of the accidental withdrawal of the lock from the trough. j Y By arranging the trough 7 at an inclination tothe spout 4, as clearly shown in thev 5 figures of the drawings, itwill be noted that the operator grasping the can need not contort the muscles of his the'lubricant to surfaces arranged at different angles, and from theabove description, taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is wrist when applying f thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further description.
Having thus fully described Vthe said invention, what I claim is In a holder for a lbrous applicator, the combination with a substantially rectangular trough having its ends provided with openings, the said trough adapted to receive a fibrous applicator which is adapted to project through the open mouth thereof, of a locking member for the applicator, said member comprising a strand of resilient wire, one of the ends of which being downturned and being provided with a longi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
tudinally extending portion arranged in a plane directly below and adapted to exert a pressure toward the upper arm provided by the Wire, the upper and longer arm adapted to pass through the openings in the trough and thro-ugh the applicator, and the lower arm adapted to be engaged beneath the under face of the trough and adapted to exerta tension thereon.
In testimony whereof I afliX in presence of two witnesses.
