Description
J. HAMPSON. PACKING GLAND. APPLICATION FILED JULY 19, 1912.
1,047,799. I Patented Dec. 17, 1912.
Fur-.1
JOHN HAMPSONI; or REISSING, PENNSYLVANIA.
I PACKING-GLAND:
Specification of Letters Patent. 1
siding at Reissing, in the county of 'Wash-' ington and State of Pennsylvania, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Glands, of which the 01: lowing is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a packing gland, and the primary object of invention is toprovide sectional interlocking glands that can be advantageously used in connection with pistons, sliderods, and other movable bodies for insuring a non-leakable' connection between the movable body and the body through which the same passes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sectional gland that can be easily and quickly disassembled, the construction move it from the body to which it is attached, thereby saving considerable labor and expense.
lVith the above and other objectsin View, the invention resides in a novel construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein 1 Figure 1 is a front elevation of the packing gland. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly broken away and partly in section. and. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the interlocking constructions or members of the gland.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the drawing wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a cylinder head or body having an opening 2 for a piston rod or movable body, (not shown). 7
3 denotes an oval shaped gland member or plate that has the ends thereof provided with openings, said openings alining with openings 5 in the cylinder head 1. The walls of the openings 5 are screw threaded, for a purpose that will presently appear. The gland member '3 has the lower edge thereof cut away, as at 6 and the front side thereof provided with a rectangular enlargement 7. The enlargement 7 is provided with an outwardly extending semicylindrical bearing 8 and the underneath somewhat, similar to the member 3, said gland'member havingthe ends thereof provided with openings 11 alining with the. openings l and 5. Extending through openings'are screw bolts l2that' arescrewed into the openings 5 to retainthe members 3 and 10 together inengagement with the cylin- 'der head 1.
The member 10 has a rear: wardly extending enlargement 13 at. the lower edge thereof that extends into the cut p H Patented Dec.'1'7,1912. Application filed July 19,1912. Serial in. 710,385.
"10 denotes an outer gland member or plate away P rtion 6 of th membr 3, and th argement 13 has a semicylindrical bearing 14 confrontingthe semicylindrical bearing 8. The bearing 14 is provided with tongues 15 that extend into the cut away portion 9 of the bearing 8. *The manner'of connecting the semicylindrical bearings -8 and 14 together prevents displacement of one bearing relatively to the other, and the enlargements 7 and 13 have the same'func:
tion relatively to the members 3 and 10.
It is apparent that by removing the screw 7 bolts 12 that the gland members can be easily and quickly disassembled, without in terfering with a piston rod or other movable bodies that extend through the opening 2 of the cylinder head 1.
I wouldhave it understood that the structural elements of my invention are susceptible to such modifications and variations as fall within the scope of the appended claims. .7
What I claim is r 1. A packing gland comprising a plate having one side centrally thereof cut away to form an opening, said plate having its outer face provided with a rectangular enlargement, the sides; thereof being in alinement with the sides of said opening, said enlargement flush with one side of the plate I and terminating in said'opening, a semicylindrical gland member projecting laterally from the inner end of said enlargement, a second plate mounted upon the first-plate and abutting against the sides of said enlargement, said second plate filling said opening and provided with a semicylindrical bearing abutting against the'bearing of the enlargement, and means for securing said plates together.
2. A packing gland comprising a plate having one side centrally thereof cut away I a to form an opening, said plate having its outer face provided with a rectangular enlargement, the sides thereof beingvin aline ment with the sides of said opening, said enlargement flush with one side of the plate and terminating in said opening, a semicylindrical gland member projecting laterally from the inner end of said enlargement, a second plate mounted upon the first plate and abutting against the sides of said enlargement, said second plate filling said opening and provided with a semicylindrical 1O bearing abutting against the bearing of the enlargement, and means for securing said plates together, one of said bearings cutaway and the other of said bearings provided with a tongue extending into the cut away portion of the other bearing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HAMPSON.
