Description
To all whom 'it may con/cern:
have invented anew and useful Improvementin Steam- Valves; and I dohereby declare that the following is enable others Skilled in the art to make and use the `ing forming part of this specification. y This ,invention relates to valvesfor steam-engines; and consists in certain improvements thereon, which will' be specified hereinafter. i
The said improved `valveconsists of a circular 'case with``valveseat for attachment to the steam-cylinder, having the :ordinaryvlive-steam ports, in which case is a hollow cylindrical waive, receiving the live steam around the shaft, which is hollow, andsupply.- ing it throughthe rim-to the 1ive-steam ports, and rc- -ceiving the exhaust therefrom into'a passageleading from the rim tothe hollow shaft,.;by which Vit isv disg i charged, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of my improved valve, taken on the line :c 'x of Iig. 2, and Figure 2 represents ascction taken onthe line y y `ofgla '1' parts. y
` Arepresents the cylindrical case, havinga concave .valve-seat, with steam-ports as `B represents a hollow cylindrical valve fitting the sages D D', and an exhaust passage, E, leading from the rim to the hollow shaft. t
. F represents the steam-pipe by which the steam' is admitted to therjacket G, `and from that into the `.H represents a craukyattached to the sh'aft O, for
` working it back and forth by the ieccentrcrod, to b e attached to't-he wristpin thereof. l
` yRcrran'sz STEAM-VALVE.
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEcKnNBY, of Western,1n the county of Platte and Statejof Missouri,`
a full, clear, and exact description thereof, -which willj same, reference being'had to the accompanying draw' Similar letters of freference Aindicate 'corresponding said case, and-having a hollow shaft, G,`livesteam pas-` G'EoRG'E LfncKENBY, or w-EsirnimhIssoUnL Leners Para: No. 104,746, zaad .mme 2s, 1870.
" The Scheul'e referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
= The live-steam passages DD' and exhaust E are so arranged, realatively to each other and the. ports a a',.
that, when the passage D coincides with its ports a for the admissionof steam thereto, the passage D'will Ybe cut od from its port, and the exhaust-passage E will ope-n the communicationv withit.
The shaft C -is provided with suitable stuffing-boxes at each side of 'the case.
i The upward .pressure on the valve due to the reac tion at the passages D D is borne bythe journals of the shaft C, whereby that friction is greatly reduced,V
andthe valve in a measure balanced.
The mode of 'operation is as follows: i
The steam iirst enters the pipe' F, passes through the hollowsleeveG, andlls the chamberlformed by cylinder B. When this cylinder Bpresents the passage D to one' port'a, as shown in drawing, fig. 1,
steam is admitted toon'e sitle of the piston, while port,
with the central aperture thereof, so as to alternately Y exhaust the steam `from each end of the piston, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the steam-inlet F, sleeve G,
case A, and valve-chamber l?, with a hollow shaft, O, discharginggthe exhaust steam at the side in the man ner set forth. y
