REGULATOR FOR FLUID-HEATING SYSTEMS.

To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, LEWIS H. PHELPS, a citizen of the United. States, residing at est-field, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Fluid-Heating Systems, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in fluid expansion regulators for heating systems and has particular reference to appa-1 ratus adapted to control the expansion of fluids under pressure in hot water heating systems.
The object of the invention is the providing of apparatus adapted to be mounted in the system of piping of a hot water heating system adapted to control the expansion of fluids in a system of that nature and maintain said system under a predetermined degree of pressure and means whereby after the expansion of the fluids in said system the said expanded fluids are permitted to return from a suitable fluid expansion retaining means through the regulating apparatus to the system. 7
In the following is described in connection with the accompanying drawings one embodiment of the invention, the features thereof being more particularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a vertical section of the apparatus with parts thereof shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1, showing a plan view of the slide valve; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of said valve.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings 30 designates a casing provided at its lower end with an internally threaded nipple 31 adapted to receive fluid pipe connection 32 and at its side thereof near the top a nipple 33 adapted to receive fluid expansion pipe connection 34, the top of said casing being threaded internally to receive cap or cover 35 having formed thereon a boss 36 provided with a bearing 37 the object of which is hereinafter described. Said casing 30 has cast therewith, a web 38 provided at its center with a depending valve casing 39 and on its face a valve seat 40 beveled to receive ground valve head 41 on valve 42 which in turn has mounted therein a threaded plug 43 carrying spindle 44 the upper end thereof finding bearing, guid- Specification of Letters Patent.

ance and support in bearing 37 in cap 35 and boss 36, said spindle in turn carrying weight 45, the object of which is to provide means for holding valve 42 in its normal position before expansion has taken place throughout a system of this nature. When the regulator is in its normal position or when valve 42 is closed web 38 divides the interior recesses of casing 30 into two inde pendent fluid chambers 46 and 47. Valve 42 has cut therein a plurality of ports 48 communicating with chamber 46 and auxiliary ports 49 which permit the fluids during expansion to pass from said chamber 46 through said ports into chamber 47 thence through pipe connection 34 to a suitable expansion tank said tank is not shown herein as it forms no part of this invention). Valve 42 has also cut therein return ports 50 communicating with chamber 51 the walls thereof having formed thereon a valve seat 52 having mounted therein a valve 53 adapted to control the return passage of fluids from chamber 47 through ports 50 into ports 48 after the expansion has takenplace or when the valve 42 is again reseated by weight 45 permitting the expanded fluids to again reenter the system from the expansion tank.
The operation of the device is as follows: Before the fluids expand in hot water heating systems the regulator is held in substantially normal position and immediately upon the generation of heat throughout the said means of radiation and when, as a matter of illustration, the expansion reaches the point of substantially ten pounds pressure, the expansion valve is moved vertically upwardly from its valve seat permitting the fluids under expansion to pass intothe upper fluid expansion chamber. It will be obvious from a study of the structure that the return fluid ports 50 and the valve 53 form a substantial part of valve 42, the expansion of the fluids being controlled by means of the valve 42 which is in turn controlled by means of the pressure weight 45, the pressure of which must necessarily be ascertained before sealing the system. The plurality of fluid expansion ports and return fluid ports provides a means more readily acquiring a perfect expansion of the fluids under pressure, also one wherein the return of the expanded fluids is had thus obviating any possible interruption of fluids either during expansion or the return there of through the regulator.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the character described comprising a casing having cast integrally therewith at its center and extending diametrically across said casing a web provided with a valve seat and a depending circular wall dividing said easing into two independent chambers, said wall providing a fluid passageway adapted to form a meansj of communication between said chambers, a cover for said casing provided with a! boss having formed therein a bearing adapted to form a guide reception means,
a fluid inlet pipe connection communicating with one of said chambers, a fluid outletj pipe connection communicating with the: other of said chambers, a fluid expansion,
valve mounted in said valve seat and adapted to open in the direction of the flow; toward the fluid outlet pipe and having formed therein fluid expansion passages" adapted to form means of communication,
the flow toward the fluid inlet pipe connectionv and normally resting within said seat fluids therethrough.

The combination with a casing, a web dividing the casing into two chambers and having a depending valve bearing, said casing having a fluid inlet in one chamber and a fluid outlet in the other chamber; of a lift valve slidable in said bearing having a passage communicating with the fiuid inlet chamber and a passage communicating with the fluid outlet chamber, said passages being in communication with each other, a check valve between said passages, said lift valve having an auxiliary passage through its wall connecting with the passage leading to the inlet chamber, said auxiliary passage controlled by the movement of the lift valve i with respect to its bearing, and means load the valve.
