To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. FARRING- 'roN, a citizen of the Unite-d States, and a resident of Greentop, in the county of Schuyler, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements invBoot Attachments, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to boot attachments by means of which a boo-t may be converted from an ordinary knee boot into a wading or riding boot. 1
The object of theinvention is to provide a simple and etlicient attachment whereby the top of a boot and an auxiliary top may besecurely clamped together in water tight relation;
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain no-vel features of construction, and combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a boot equipped with this improved attachment. Fig. 2 represents a detailed perspective view of the inner clamping band. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail' perspective views of the outer clamping band, showing Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the boot with the top turned down and showing the clamping devices in position.
In the embodiment illustrated, a boot A, of ordinary construction, is sho-wn to which a snpplementary boot top B is connected by means o-f this impro-ved attachment.
This attachment comprises an inner clamping band 1 composed of any suitable material, preferably ofsheet metal.' This band 1 is adjustable by means of a longitudinal slot 2 extending inwardly a suitable distance from one end of the strip -which forms the band the other end of said strip being provided with longitudinally spaced screw bolts or studs 3 which are adapted to project through the slot 2 and be secured to hold the band in adjusted posit-ion by means of nuts 4L or other suitable fastening devices. This band l is designed to be placed within the upper portion of the leg of the boot A and is preferably slightlyv greater in diameter than the diameter of said boot top to adapt t-he band to fit tightly within said top. This band 1 is shown arranged about three inches from the top of the boot on its inner 6 the other end of said strip being reduced and provided at its terminalwith a T head 7 for a purpose to be described. Adjustably mounted on the slotted 'end of the band 5 is a bearing plate 8 which tits smoothly cn the inner face of said band being made approximately t-he same width as said band and having laterally extending apertured lugs v9 projecting outwardly from Iits opposite edges toprovide bearings for a clamping lever to be described. This plate 8 is held in adjusted position on the band 5 means of a threaded stud 10 which extends from said plate through the slot 6 and is provided 0n its outer end with a securing nut 11. This stud 10 is preferably arrangedv near one end off the plate S and another stud 12 of greater length extends from the oppo-' site end of the plate through the slot 6 and with which the clamping lever is deby ,i
signed to engage ina manner hereinafter described.
A clamping lever 13 having laterally exi tending studs 14 mounted in the apertured lugs 9 of the bearing plate is provided with a longitudinally extendingslot- 15 into which the reduced end of the band 5 is adapted to Y extend and slide therein, the T head 7 of said end holding it against accidental separation from the lever and yet permitting it to move longitudinally therein. The outer end of the slot 15 in said lever 13 has laterally extending communicating recesses or notches 16 arranged opposite each other and which are yet sufficiently deep to permit the T head -7 of the reduced en'd of the band to be inserted therethrough, this head'T-being preferably offset inwardly to permit the parts to fit closely when in clamping relation. This clamping lever 13 is provided at its free end beyond the slot 15 with an aperture 17 which is adapted to fit over the stud 12 on the plate 8 when the lever is in closed locking position and it is held in this position by means of a. milled nut 18 engaged with the projecting end of the stud 12 as is shown clearlyin 1. This band is designed to be placedr over the auxiliary boot leg B in parallel relation with the inner clamping band1which is arranged inside the boot tcp, it of course being under stood that the auxiliary top is lirst passer over the top of the boot leg, it being preferably slipped well down over the boot leg and lturned to cause the outer face of the` auxiliary top to be arranged adjacent the youter face of the boot top. rlhe outer band 5 is then placed over the superposed top B and the leg of the boot A in the position opposite the inner band 1 and when so p0- sitioned, the clamping lever 13 is moved for- Ward and the aperture 17 engaged with the stud 12 whereby said band is drawn tightly over the boot top and the two layers oi' materiall between it and the inner band tightly clamped between them substantially in water tight relation. The nut 18 is then screwed on the studf12 and the parts will be held securely in adjusted position. The boot top B will then be turned upwardly.
.and the outer clamping band 5 will be housed within said top and protected should the boots be used for wading.
While I have described the outer band as arranged within the boot top B, it need not necessarily be so disposed but if desired may be placed on the outer face of the boot top and secured to the boot leg between it and the inner band- 1.
By the use of this improved clamp, auxiliary leggings'or tops may be kept in stock and attached when desired to the tops of a pair of ordinary boots thus forming waist or hip boo-ts without going to the expense of buying, it'of course being obvious that the detachable top will be cheaper than a one piece hip boot.
While l have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regards details and as being embodied in certain precise forms, l do not desire to be limited thereto unduly any more than is pointed out in the -vjustably mounted on one end, a clamping lever fulcrumed on said bearing plate and ,havinga longitudinally extending slot therein the other end of said band being reduced to slide within said slot and having a T- shaped head at its free end.

A boot attachment comprising an inner clamping band, an outer clamping band Jfor coperation with said inner band composed of a split ring having a bearing plate adjustably mounted on one end, a clamping lever fulcrumed on said bearing plate and having a longitudinally extending slot therein the other end of said band being reduced to slide within said slo-t and having va l"`-shaped head at its free end, said T- shaped end being olset inwardly, and means for securing said clamping lever in a locking posit-ion.
3. A boot attachment comprising an inneraSO.
clamping band, an outer clamping band for.' cooperation with said inner band composed ot' a split ring having a bearing plate adjustably mounted on one end, a clamping lever fulcrumed on said bearing plate and having a longitudinally extending slot therein the other end of said band being reduced to slide within said slot and having a T-shaped head at its free end, said T- shaped end being offset inwardly, said lever having an aperture in its free end beyond the slot therein, a stud carried by said plate for engagement with said apertured end of the lever, and means for locking said lever in engagement with said stud.
